Why would it be dangerous? The only thing a modchip will be doing is tricking the drive laser that any disc that is inserted is a valid Nintendo created disc. modchips have nothing to do with the software functionality of the system. Adding a modchip to the system is like installing a different Disc drive inside a computer. You can make that change all you want, given the proper connections are present/made, and you will...well should...have no problems at all, even when restoring from a backup, computers could give a rats a** if the disc drive was changed, so long as it is valid.

Well, those rummors be lies. There are many people that have both modchips and numerous softmods. If you would feel better, install the chip, then run a nand backup of the system, it won't...shouldn't...change, but if you can sleep better at night, go a head and do it.

If you don't mind me asking, what are these rumors saying?

@dranonflamesz Modchips can only destroy your drive. They can't void your warranty if you send it to Nintendo because you can replace your drive.

well since it can break is there a way to reduce it?

replace your drive - every wii drive works (a D2B works in a D3-2/D4 system)
