    Hello all,

i have been following the wii homebrew scene for a while now and have a 3.4E firmware wii. i also have the homebrew channel installed and nothing else. i really want to update to 4.0. so i was wondering is it 100% FULL PROOF SAFE to do so normally? I DON"T WANT TO INSTALL MORE THINGS ONTO MY WII TO MAKE IT WORK AS I KNOW THEY ARE NOT 100% SAFE. i want to join in the homebrew scene but until their is a 100% FULL PROOF SAFE way to do so, i'm not taking a risk. i hope you guys understand and steer me in the right direction.

thanks to all those who answer.

There is no 100% proof way to do anything. If you think that there will be 100% security in anything you should better stop right now because anything could happen.

If you update normally, it won't hurt you or cause a brick or anything of the sort, but without a cIOS, you're going to lose a lot of functionality and have to use the bannerbomb to downgrade again. I understand your concern about a lot of things bricking your console, but unless you're really trying to, it's pretty tough to brick it.

Seeing as you're concerned about installing more on your system, I'll take it you're not wanting to use Waninkoko's updater, correct? Waninkoko's updater doesn't install anything extra. Every file that it downloads comes right from Nintendo's servers. The only thing that his updater doesn't do is patch the IOS files like Nintendo's update does.

If you can install BootMii to boot2 and do a NAND dump, your Wii will be pretty much unbrickable.

I'll try to explain it the best I can.

Boot2 is one of the first things that gets loaded when you start your Wii.
The BootMii installer patches Boot2 to check for the BootMii files on an SD card.

If it finds the BootMii, it loads it.
If not, it will just load the System Menu normally

BootMii can back up and restore your NAND
So if you screw up your Wii and have your NAND backup up, you can boot straight into BootMii and restore it.

But BootMii is more than just brick protection.
It's also the platform for the next generation of Wii homebrew.
Homebrew will be able to run without Nintendo's IOS and have full access to both of the Wii's processors.

    Read more here:
    http://bootmii.org/

The newer Wii's don't have the vulnerability needed to install BootMii to Boot2, so it needs to be installed as an IOS.
Sadly, BootMii installed as an IOS does'nt give any brick protection

    EDIT:
Thought you were the original poster

I would install BootMii using the HackMii Installer through the HBC. Then boot to BootMii and backup your NAND. Then use Waninkoko's 4.0 updater. Then backup your NAND again. Now you will have two backups at both revisions that you could easily switch between if necessary and you will have full brick protection. If you update without using Waninkoks's updater you will lose the HBC. Read up son....

    Google is your friend...

and honestly, it pretty much is full proof as long as you read up on stuff. Even if you don't, just make a nand backup with bootmii and you're invincible. BootMii takes about 5 seconds to install.

there is a bigger chance that you brick when updating to 4.0 through nintendo, than while installing cioscorp...

so everything is pretty much brick safe...
