Hello. My friend sent me a couple links today and it got me wondering. Do you guys believe in fate or are we all programmed to believe in it but we're just catching up to the end of our timeline which is death.

Tell me what do you guys think. Are we in control or do we have none? I personally believe we are all pre destined. However, we are not fully predestined we can't change the path of our life but we can change the people we love. The same events would still take place just with different people.

I completely agree, I feel like our life is a map and we're going to do all of the things on the map, but we can control some aspects of the future such as who we love, who we are friends with, etc.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

But I do believe that the person you end up marrying is pre programed.

What do you man by the second part? For instance, The person you marry is pre-programmed to fall in love with you?

Edit: Even though they don't know it until they meet you.

Prediction: Donald Trump makes the presidency
Outcome: I move to Germany with my girlfriend and happily go to college without his consent

For cereal though, I don't believe in predetermined futures. I believe that every person has free will no matter what. I also have trouble believing that there is exactly one person that you can fall in love with and marry. I think it's more of a thing where there are a handful of people who perfectly fit you, but not just one

I believe in a deterministic universe. Rolling a die seems random, but it is dependent on temperature, air flow, angle, weight and many other factors. Because the process has so many factors we simply observe and make statistical predictions.

Everything in the universe could be predicted if you knew all of the initial conditions and all of the laws of physics. In this sense humans have no choice, and everything is predetermined by the initial conditions.

However, like before, this is so complex we tend to brush it aside. We say humans have free choice.

But you could imagine if we took all of the variables at the beginning of the universe and put them into a powerful enough computer, you could predict the future.

To a degree, I suppose. There would always be people or things that do things completely unpredictably, though

Humans are biological machines. The mind is composed of neurons which obey all the laws of chemistry and physics. Therefore the mind must react to the exact same stimuli the exact same way.

If the functioning of the human mind is completely dependent on its stimuli, then you could predict the actions of an individual based entirely on initial conditions.

Therefore if you know all of the variables and all of the laws, humans cannot act unpredictably.

But that can't possibly be true, otherwise it would be possible for people who grew up with the same (or similar) life experiences to have similar knowledge and decision-making process, which doesn't happen

Such an experiment is not possible. The mind is constructed by genetics and shaped by experience.

Even if two people had the exact same DNA, it is not currently possible to raise them in the exact same conditions.

I suppose. There also isn't any evidence of a mechanical nature to humans, though. Yes, we do have a lot of traits baked into us (violence, for one) but like I said earlier I have a hard time with the concept that we don't have free will and are just reacting to stimuli in real time

By what other means might the human mind function? Every cause has an effect and vice versa.

If humans have free will you would have to make an appeal to meta physics and believe in something like a soul.

I mean I do believe in a soul outside of just your brain, so maybe that's part of the "problem" lol

Fair enough. But so far everything we have studied has boiled down to cause and effect, and there is no evidence for any thing metaphysical.
That really is where the true debate lies, since there doesn't need to be any evidence for something metaphysical in nature, it would actually make more sense for it to not leave evidence. Either way though, that's a debate that we shouldn't get into, let's just accept our differences in beliefs :)

Okay :)

But I think that's a fun debate too.
