Hacking I need to re-hack my Wii

TL;DR warning

So, after using my Wii yesterday, I have reasonably concluded that my Wii needs to be re-hacked. I have noticed some rather odd behavior that I need to mention and hopefully by doing that, I can find out just what it is I need to do, so, I'll go ahead and list the reasons.

1 - Snes9xGx hates USB devices, period. A while back, I reported that my Western Digital My Passport HDD didn't like Snes9xGx and erroneously concluded that Snes9xgx was at fault. Then I eventually assumed my HDD was at fault, however, what I discovered last night surprised me. It doesn't like any USB drive I use, whether it be a USB hard drive or a USB flash drive, as both exhibited the exact same behaviors, and that is, random lockups and code dumps. It's not just my HDD but any USB-related thing plain and simply will not cooperated with Snes9xgx. This is not normal to say the least and this is one reason I believe my Wii needs to be re-hacked. Oddly enough, it runs perfectly stable from an SDHC card, as does WiiMC.

2 - SysCheck does not function from a 2GB SD card properly. I attempted to run SysCheck and find out every detail about the installed hacks, cIOSes, forwarders, etc I had installed so I could get as much info as I could. I hoped that by providing that information, I could get assistance on fixing Snes9xgx on a forum (in this case, Wiihacks) but it was to no avail. The SysCheck 1.6.0 does not complete the check, the progress bar gets about 90% through and then the disc slot LED starts flashing on and off every couple of seconds, and does not do anything even after waiting five minutes. I don't know how normal that is, or if that's supposed to be that way when getting the information. This is another reason I believe something is seriously jacked up.

3 - GenplusGX stops functioning altogether and locks up the system. I had installed a forwarder from these forums for GenplusGX that searches the .wad file on the HDD or SD card when it boots from the menu. For a long time, it worked perfectly and never ran into anything like a code dump or freezing. No, it ran as smooth as butter, until last night. When I loaded from either the forwarder and from HBC 1.1.0, it froze up with a black screen but without a DSI exception code, forcing me to hard reboot.

I'm not sure why these odd issues are occurring, much less how or when they truly began, but suffice to say, it's pissing me off and leads me to the conclusion that it must be re-hacked from scratch, which I believe ModMii can do fairly quickly. Any suggestions? Again, I cannot provide detailed information due to the inability to run SysCheck properly.

HBC Version: 1.1.0
Snes9xgx: 4.2.8 (or any version for that matter)
Misc Info: Neither Snes9xGx nor WiiMC have the "no_ios_reload" in the .xml files
GenplusGX: 1.6.0
BootMii: 1.4
Priiloader: 0.8
WiiMC: 1.1.X (no version works without crashing)

HDD Hierarchy: "X:\apps\snes9xgx\boot.dol" and "X:\snes9xgx\roms\game_name.sfc", (so by this logic, the folder structure should be correctly configured on the HDD)

During it's progress, syscheck is showing which ios it's working on. (Not sure if yours get that far.)
If it hangs when it processes one of the cios above 200, it might be worth to try to deinstall that cios.
With a bit of luck, syscheck will finish normally afterwards and provide the info you are looking for.

When I installed a modified bootmii ios in slot 253, syscheck didn't like it either and simply hang on it.

dangerous? it worked fine for me. but it could brick your wii. so thats somthing i guess.

i had some issues with the new HB, not sure how many people have/had the issue. my HB wasn't showing any text. some times wiimc would crap out, an sys check would do the same as your.(load half way the stop.). i down graded the HB an every thing started to work normal again. also you can down grade wiimc.(IMPO), 1.1.4-1.1.5 for wii mc is the most stable, but not sure what you use yours for.( i mostly liesten to my music).

? Homebrew Channel 1.0.0 running on IOS58 ? so what HBC do you have? 1.1.0 or 1.0.8? looks like you either loaded the wrong hackmii, or you haven't updated in a very long time.. grab the hackmii installer from mod mi an try that though that will give you 1.1.1 HBC, an you might have the same problems as i did. or it might work. try that first an repost.
(or this could be a typo on your part or the syscheck's part).. but it is funny to see HBC at 1.0.0 (new is 1.1.0)

Ooookay, I updated the HBC to 1.1.0 (the most recent one) and what that report did was create a typo saying it was 1.0.0 So, I will use DopMii and SysCheck (another version) but as to why it detected HBC as an old one when mine is up to date is beyond me:

It's probably a small bug in the syscheck program or the hbc simply not reporting it's version correctly to syscheck.
I shouldn't worry to much about that. It's not what is causing all your problems.

So, what should I do about my Wii and getting it to work properly? Just the other day Snes9xGx started refusing to load telling me it can't find the USB and SD devices, so....yeah.

Usually, people recommend to use modmii and rehack your wii from scratch. Obviously, you can skip the steps that use an exploit to install bootmii and the homebrew channel, as you already have those.

Snes9xGx is a homebrew program. This means that it doesn't need a cios to run. So, those being outdated is not why it's not recognising your sd and usb drive. It is creating a config file, and maybe something happened to that file. So, it might be worth trying to rename that to see if it gives an improvement. (Most emulators recreate such a file if they can't find it.)

Another issue is the fact that most emulators don't reload the ios they are running on. This means it can make a difference how you launch the emulator. I have seen occasions where the emulator refused to mount the usb drive when it was started from the homebrew channel, and the emulator was started from usb as well. Launching it with wiixplorer worked fine. IOS58 has longtime been the only official ios with usb 2.0 support. Some cios also have usb 2.0 support, but they use different code for it.

So, there is no guarantee that remodding your wii will fix all your problems. It's very well possible you will need to fix them one at a time after you remodded.

That's what I was afraid of. I very well might need to re-create the config files for both Snes9xGx and GenplusGX (which also doesn't work anymore; I get to the ROM selection screen, choose a ROM and then freezes at a black screen).. I never used Wiixplorer but I did use official Wads to install forwarders for USB Loader GX, Snes9xGx, FceuGC, etc and they all still work. It looks like there's a possible conflict somewhere and will likely take a lot of trial and error to neutralize it. If it doesn't work after I try recreating those files, then should I just use Modmii?

Yes, modmii is able to update all your ios and cios to the latest versions. Altough, as I explained, it might help more with usbloaders than it does with homebrew.

I know I probably asked before, but is your harddisk one of those newer usb 3.0 compatible types?

Yes, but everything else works perfectly fine with it, as per the GBAtemp USB device compatibility list. USB 3.0 is fully compatible with USB 2.0, so it shouldn't make that much of a difference . I also found out that Dborth/Tantric has the same HDD as me (found out by talking back and forth via email) and Snes9xGx works perfectly for him; now THAT is something I find odd. I should also note that despite being USB 3.0, USB Loader GX works perfectly, heck, not once have I ever had any issues with it. Had I known that USB 3.0 was so abhorred around here, I would have gotten a different model from the same manufacturer.
