So I just got this DSi from a friend,
Of course it is stock... lame...

((( I am familiar with modding the Wii... )))

So what can I do to a DSi?
I would like to backup my games and play them off the SDHC card
and install custom theames and what not

I am NOT asking for detailed instructions, I am asking what do I look for and what can I do?
So, what am I looking for for installing Homebrew or what ever?
    Theam installers?
all that, just a list of what o go find...

    Thanks guys!!!

    Stock? Lol this isn't Android.

Anyways you can't hack the DSi. You will have to buy a flashcart to play backup games.

lol, nope its not an Andoid or an iPhone [IMG]

Ok, so if I am understanding you correctly,
    1) you can not customize a DSi
    2) you can install Homebrew and Play backups and you need a flashcart?
    or should that read flashcard?

I have a several flashcards, what topic should I look for to learn how to play the backups and what to install / do to my DSi to enable it to play them?

I hate being a noob again, [IMG]
but I just dont know where to start with this thing & have spent a few hours looking before posting, I found some youtube vids, but as we all know "YouTube vids can easily help you mess up your stuff!"

    Thanks Again,

You don't softmod DS models, you WILL need a flash cart.

    • DS / DS Lite
The card will work on an original (fat) DS or a DS Lite.
    • DSi / DSi XL
The card will work on a DSi or DSi XL as well.
    • Game Updates
Firmware updates are what let cards play newer games, these are the life-blood of the card.
    • SDHC
SDHC refers to SD cards larger than 2GB (gigabytes). If there's no SDHC support, you can only use SD cards up to 2GB.
    • WiFi Update
The Acekard 2i can update it's cheats (and get minor bug fixes) over WiFi without having to connect to a computer.
    • Clean Mode
The DSTwo has special features to ignore AP in most games, letting you play them without having to wait for a firmware update first.
    • RTS
The Real-Time Save (Save State) function lets you save and reload your game progress at any moment you wish.
    • In-Game Guide
You can pull up text files and images in-game, in order to check a walkthrough or map you downloaded at any time during a game.
    • Slow Motion
The card lets you slow down the game speed as you wish.
    • In-Game Cheats
The card lets you create and modify cheats while the game is running.
    • Special Homebrew
The card has multiple pieces of special homebrew, such as it's own GBA and SNES emulators, as well as text/PDF reader and video player.
    • Battery Life
Unfortunately the DSTwo's extra CPU and RAM (which give it the special features) eat into the battery life a bit.

A flash cart, it's a DS-type game cart that goes into the DS slot and you play games and homebrew off of it. I posted a chart comparing the best flash carts for price and features (you'll want the Acekard 2i or the DSTwo).

You cannot use the DSi's SD slot for homebrew.

Also, for a good site to get from, realhotstuff.com I'd recommend now, ShopTemp was great, but it's not going so great right now...

Just don't get an R4i or anything, you'd best stick with the Acekard 2i if you're strapped for cash, or DSTWO if you can afford it and want all the greatest features.

Ok, so what is the mini SD card for?

Is that just for the homebrew stuff?
Do I use my 8Gb SD card for my roms or do I need to put my roms on the mini SD card thats built into the flashcart?

You put the roms and what not on your MicroSD

Then that MicroSD goes into your Flashcard.

The flash carts have a MicroSD slot that you put your own MicroSD card into.

    lol @ shadow soldier...

    Thanks to both of you!

Ok, so I guess my 8gb SD card is useless and can go in my desk & I will go buy a 8gb microSD, I should have checked on this before buying it... lol

    Thanks Much!

If you have an 8gb SD card, you can stick it in your DSi in case you decide to download some DSiWare or something. Just make sure your card is updated to run on DSi firmware 1.4.1

    Just Remember one thing!

SCDS2 Eats at Battery more due to having a Onboard CPU to Handle all the Extra Features.

Only by a small amount. You can still get a good amount of gaming hours in.
