You can probably just use the package manager to install Wine for you. There are a few easy packages for it though which might be more pleasant (been ages since I've installed it though, especially on ubuntu, so can't remember the name

) which also set up IE and etc for you under wine.

You could also (if its just for basic applications) run VirtualBox in seamless mode.

This way you run your windows copy on top of your ubuntu, and it looks pretty awesome.

Nope, virtual box emulates a computer system, where you can install windows on.
Let's say, it's a computer in you computer, you just need to install virtualbox, get a copy of windows, and install it in the virtualbox.

So you still need the Windows install disc. Worse case scenario, you should be able to track down a Windows 7 RC. I'd still suggest that you try Wine first, as it's a better solution if it works.

You can also choose to cut the Virtual Machine off from the net, so you shouldn't really have to worry about security in that regard.

Ive never had any luck running anything cool in wine.

Virtualbox is the way to go. Dont install it from your package manager though, because that version doesnt have usb support.

Get the full installer free from their site.

Wine is a LOT better than it used to be. I have Uplink, Yu-Gi-Oh and a few other games running happily through it. However for certain programs, such as Macromedia Flash 8 I find it works better through Virtualbox with a stripped XP in it.
