I am making Retroarch Overlays sized to fit 3DS starting with Game Gear. Also some Retroarch Menu Themes. Instructions and templates included.

Here are a couple that I made in different sizes since I couldn't find any to download. I couldn't find templates so I made these templates which can be used with gimp.

Overlays

Themes

EDIT: New Category - Bax Boot Animations
New Category - Bottom Menu Theme

3DS Boot Animations (Instructions HERE)

Bottom Menu Theme

If it has large in the name it will fit a screen size that is custom 196x180 which still keeps the aspect ratio,

The regular named ones will fit the 1x true resolution. Default is set to 3x so you will have to go to Settings>Video>Scaling to adjust.

I included these instructions on how to activate the overlay in each zip.

Place the image and cfg file in Retroarch/overlays

Per-Game Overlays via the RetroArch GUI

Go to the Settings menu and find the User Interface submenu and enable Show Advanced Settings

Go to the Settings menu and find the Configuration submenu. Make sure that "Use Content-Specific Core Options If Available" and "Load Override Files Automatically" are enabled.

Load a game. Open the RA "Quick Menu" and then use the GUI to set up the Overlay according to your preferences.

From the Quick Menu, select "Save Game Overrides."

Default Video is 3x to fill the heighth of the 3DS Screen. Exit quick menu and go to retroarch settings>Video>scaling

Select Custom aspect ratio and input either 160x144 for true resolution or 196X180 for larger screen size overlay.

Large = 196x180
Regular =160x144

Now for the Retroarch Themes

Place the unzipped theme folder in Retroarch/assets/wallpaper on your sd card.

I renamed this folder to "Current Theme" and placed each theme folder in here as well so that I could just mpve and overwrite the images in the folder with another theme folder if I wanted to change themes without having to open the retroarch config every time.

Normally you could point to the folder in the retroarch menu except the image "MENU.png" doesn't appear for me in the retroarch settings which many others have also experienced. I had to point to it directly in the config. I recommend this.

Open your retroarch config and Ctrl + F search "menu_wallpaper" without the quotes. Make sure that it looks like this

menu_wallpaper = "sdmc:/retroarch/assets/wallpapers/CurrentTheme/MENU.png"

"CurrentTheme" can be whatever you named the folder with the images in them. The zip drive has the name of the theme as default so you will have to change that.

Start retroarch

Go to User Interface>Menu and select xmb

(If you didn't previously edit your retroarch config otherwise skip) Go to User Interface>Appearance>Background Image>sdmc:/retroarch>assets>wallpaper>[theme name]> and select MENU.png . If it doesn't show MENU.png you will have to edit your config.

After that return to User Interface>Appearance>Dynamic Background and set it to on. This allows for changing of the console image when changing cores.

You can also modify how you want your thumbnails to look in this menu if you have downloaded them.

Make sure opacity is set to 1.000

These are looking great so far, thanks for sharing.
I've only added templates and overlays for the consoles i use the most, i do have a few overlays available which are not uploaded yet.

Take a look at: https://github.com/libretro/common-overlays/tree/master/ctr
If you want to, these could be merged as-well as these would make a great addition.

I also really like the xmb themes, but due to performce i've chosen to use rgui on 3ds.
While not really documented, dynamic wallpaper support also has been added for rgui.

If you prefer xmb, go for it!
I'm sure any theme optimized for 3ds would also be a great addition to have merged if you want to.

If you're interested in using dynamic themes with rgui, take a look at this:
https://github.com/libretro/retroarch-assets/tree/master/wallpapers/rgui/libretro_dynamic

These are optimized for 3ds with most platforms already available. These can easily be used as templates when desired.

They worked fine on my PS Vita so I thought it would be fine with 3DS. I don't use many cores on 3DS so I never noticed a performance issue.

Do you know if Game Boy Retroarch borders are the same size as gameyob? If not I want to convert the ones I have made for gameyob. I might use retroarch more since I can't screenshot with luma with that app.

Added some GBA Overlays. I know many people like using VC injects though I can't seem to screenshot with luma in them so I decided to make them for retroarch. Unfortunately it doesn't show the overlay though. IDK if it is possible

Started SNES Overlays. Anything you think is missing? I still have 100+ more I plan to do.

Started doing Bottom_Menu Themes

Unzip and replace Bottom_Menu.png in retroarch/assets/ctr on your sd card.

These are fantastic. Thank you for sharing. You should consider submitting a pull request adding a few of the GBA templates to Retroarch on GitHub.

@SAORIxMEGUMIN Would you be willing to make an overlay for the Sega Mega-Drive / Genesis and for the NEC Turbo Duo? They both have great cores for Retroarch but unlike NES, PSX and SNES, they have no overlays available.

Thanks!

That would be great although I would love one that does not have any Sega or NEC characters on it (just the system art).
These will be a bit harder to do since megadrive is all one color and the size of the original resolution is such that only a slim portion of the sides will be visible for the overlay unless you wish to play at a custom resolution that is smaller than full screen. Even at full screen it is a smaller resolution size than original.

I don’t want to be choosy. You are the boss here :). I would suggest looking at the PSX overlay for inspiration. It does a good job even though it is quite small.

I thought the resolution was higher res, it is not as high as I expected. I can have it like the SNES one.
