So I spilled some surface cleaner on my 3ds xl and now when I try to start it the power light comes on but the screens remain black. Is there anything I can do or is it broken for good?

Any advice (apart from not to be so bloody stupid, I know that already!) appreciated,

general advice for spills. turn it upside down (according to the surface you spilt on) ASAP (too late now i suppose, but cant hurt) DO NOT turn it on (again too late) try to put in a closed bag with those little marshmallow thingies that shoes and such come in. rice works in a pinch.
can also open it up completely and try to dry it out like that.

but if this ever happens again. turn it off ASAP. turn it upside down ASAP (if you spilled the bottom then put the bottom on a towel, if you spilled on the front then put the front on a towel etc etc). and do NOT turn it on for a good day or more. if you try to turn it on with liquid still inside that's when you usually do the most damage.

Thanks but too late! I've already turned it on a couple of times so I guess I am screwed.
Oh well, Merry Christmas anyway!

not necessarily, try the rice trick. it really can't hurt at this point. if it still doesn't work after leaving it in a closed bag/airtight box with rice (wrap your 3ds in a sock too) (better than rice would be those industrial drying marshmallow thingies) then just put it away for a week and try after. you have nothing to lose here!

If you have the right sized screwdriver and don't mind disassembling the console, you should open it up, remove the motherboard, and wash it with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry fully. You can help accelerate the drying using a hairdryer (but not a heat gun or anything that could melt plastic). As long as you don't wait too long there won't be any time for corrosion to accumulate and your board will be fine.

The LCDs, on the other hand, might end up with some marks on the backlight, causing bright spots. Although whether that happens or not really depends on where exactly the liquid was spilled on the unit. Maybe you'll be lucky and it will turn out no liquid made its way into the LCDs.

Thanks for the advice but I'm pretty hopeless technically speaking so won't risk opening it up. Appreciate you taking the time to post though!

Quick update - your suggestion worked! I put it in rice/box/sealed bag and left it overnight and it switched on fine this morning to my delight! I've gone online with it on mario kart and all the screens/buttons etc appear to be working perfectly. So thanks again for your help!

One last question, do you think this will have still damaged the 3ds or shortened it's life span in any way?

cheers,

Dropped mine in a shower twice, rice worked both times. :P
You know those beautiful concrete walls next to the ocean? Usually in big cities in places like Florida? Well, anyways... I dropped my 3DS XL right off into the ocean! I saved it and used rice as well. It worked. But I hate the ocean now... XD Bits of Styrofoam work too.

Seeing as how we're sharing.... after putting it in rice for one night and it worked I thought I'd be clever and put it back for another 24 hours to get any remaining moisture. The next day when I took it out lots of rice had got into the insides via the cartridge slot and for a good half hour I had to suck all the rice out.
Not my greatest hour.

So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.

cyberpunk at 4k without DLSS/fidelityfx *might* exceed 12gb

but that game barely runs at native 4k
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding

When I played Cyberpunk on my old 2080 Ti it sucked lol
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
AMD could introduce something comparable to DLSS but nvidia's got a lot more experience with that
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
least amd 7xxx has tensor cores which the previous generations didn't so there is the potential for AI upscaling
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They have FSR or whatever it's called and yeah it's still not great
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
so AMD seem to finally be starting to take AI seriously
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Oh yeah those new 8000 CPUs have AI cores built in that's interesting
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Maybe they plan on offloading to the CPU?
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Would be kinda cool to have the CPU and GPU working in random more
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Tandem even
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
LLMs can be run on cpu anyway but it's quite slow

Have you ever been beaten by a wet spaghetti noodle by your girlfriend because she has a twin sister, and you got confused and fucked her dad?
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I had a girlfriend who had a twin sister and they would mess with me constantly.... Until one chipped a tooth then finally I could tell them apart.... Lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They would have the same hair style the same clothes everything... Really messed with my head lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
you've seen how much intel is struggling getting into the gpu market
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
and nvidia is already doing ARM
