Hacking how to use rts on r4

i want to use save states, aka rts, on my R4 SDHC RTS LITE. I enabled the rts feature on a game, but I don't know the button combination for creating a save state and loading a save state. How do I figure out the button combination?

I found the button key after trying random combinations. It works fine the first time, but the game crashes when I try to enter the save state menu a second time. How do I fix this?
