Hacking How to upgrade from 3.1?

Before I start, the search function isn't working (I'm getting some sort of "forbidden client" error) so my apologies if this has been covered before.

I am hacking a wii 3.1E and have HBC installed but cannot get any further as there is no ios36 installed. I tried installing ios36 v10 but it installed ios249 (which is a modified 36, right?) so can I go ahead and do the trucha bug restore using 249 (or will this brick the wii?) or do I need to upgrade from 3.1 first and then downgrade? What is the best method to use if I need to do this?

Cheers man. I used trucha to install 36 first then did the rest from step 1.

with 3.1 all i normally do is use bannerbomb, install homebrew + bootmii as boot2, create nand backup.

Then use NUS to grab a particular system menu wad, install that

then install other files such as cios

backup launchers

good to go then

NUS is very handy used it many times to update 3.1 to 3.2 for starfall in the past
