n3ds support has drastically improved over last few months (no more emunand issues, at least for now), but is there any way to play ds games without getting a separate ds cart? In the case of GW, is the bluecardfix still relevant for this purpose? (I remember it did for o3ds)
No you still need a flash cart. Blue card fix just let you use the flash cart on newer firmware versions.
