Dear gbatempers,

I have recently rediscovered how fun the wii is during lockdowns with my kids.

I have softmodded my wii years ago, and i would like to install usb loader gx. I am currently using neogamma to boot from usb/dvd. Everything works fine, but i would like a better nicer and modern interface my kids could use, and i want to import al my games to an usb drive before the cd/dvd player gets busted.

I havent got a clue how i softmodded the wii years ago, the only thing i do know whats still installed. And thats the following programs:

Homebrew channel (1.0.8 IOS61 v22.30)

Multimod manager 13.4

Neogamma r9

Also the wii has firmware version 4.1E .

I have already read some stuff online but i dont know where to start. Because i already have hacked and have homebrew i can just install usb loader? Or do i first need to do something else? (Like install cios??)

I was thinking about following the website wii.guide and start at the priiloader point?

Could someone please give me some advice? I really dont want to brick the wii..

Thanks in advance.

Can you run syscheck (it's a free homebrew app) and copy and paste the results here so myself and others can see exactly what is installed on your console before proceeding?

Looking at that, I believe you're good to go. Just throw usbloader gx on your SD card under the apps folder and it should run okay

There's a bunch of things I'd suggest updating. Your hbc is out if date and not using IOS58, your d2x cios's are v7 instead of v10-beta52 (which is basically the same as v8 final), also usually we suggest base 57 and 56 be installed to slots 249 and 250 (u have them installed to 248 and 249). There are a few other minor things, but that's what matters.

So now I'm about to blow your mind... To help update this, you can drag and drop your syscheck.csv onto modmii.exe and it will tell you what to do. Or you can use modmii to repeat the entire softmod process as if the wii was a virgin and it will get u to the same result, albeit with a couple additional redundant steps (but they don't hurt anything)

If u use modmii's syscheck updater wizard, afterwards you can run its usb loader set up wizard to help u set that up. Note that the provided Wiiflow lite and usbloader gx are a bit outdated, so u can get the latest Wiiflow from the stickied thread, or the latest usbloader gx from @blackb0x 's signature.

dear gbatempers,

I ve been tinkering alnight with my wii and your comments..
i ve got it working, but not all..

what i did.. ive tried modwii, but it said it could not connect..
tried different firewall settings.. still no luck.. i think
it might have something to do with my 15 year old 32 bit laptop..
and the webconnection is slllllooooowwwwwww.....
i am currently trowing some antivirus at it..

so i tried the other option by just put usb loader gx in the apps
folder on my sd card and it worked.. (after a hour of realizing is was my new 128 gb
sandisk usb stick that the wii did not like, the
stick gave me a black screen freeze when i started a game in usb loader)

(Just took another old 16 gb usb stick, formatted it to fat32 and it did work)

But i also would like to install it to the home screen so we dont have
to start homebrew channel first..

i have found a wad (on wii.guide), but when i try
to install it in multi mod manager it says

Installing 1/1: USB Loader GX-UNEO_Forwarder_5_1_AHBPROT - Ticket (-2011)
Final status - 1 did not complete

any ideas what goes wrong in the last step?

(besides trying with a different pc with a good internet connection and moddmii?)

your help is appreciated..

i really need to go to bed, so i will check tomorrow..
sleep tight everyone..

thanks

No viruses in modmii, u can see the code for yourself by opening modmii.bat in notepad. If you get a virus notification, it's a false positive. On virtustotal's website that majority of AVs indicate its safe, but a handful do get it wrong

Downloading ios's for the first time can take awhile, it depends on nintendo servers and connections sometimes take a couple attempts. The downloaded files are saved to modmii's temp folder so it gets a lot faster the 2nd time it's used.

That being said, if you're running a janky windows environment that hasn't been reformatted in 15 years, it's possible there's something about it that modmii doesn't like. Modmii still runs fine on my 12 year old laptop (i7 first Gen, 64 bit windows 10, 6GB of ram)

If modmii doesn't play nice with your setup, try wii.guide, it may not have all the same features and bells and whistles, but it covers the basics quite well!

Edit: regarding mmm, be sure to reload IOS249 before installing wads, or use some yawmm mod with ahbprot enabled so u don't need to reload to 249 for it to work

Dear XFlak,
First of all, i didn't had any intentions saying moddmii contains virusses.. my apologies for that...
i was mentioning my "janky" old windows laptop maybe contained virusses.
I really do appreciate your software, and i even appreciate it more that your personally trying to help a noob like me..

So now we've got that outta the way... i 've just checked on a other pc if moddmii works and it did not.. or actually.. the dutch
version did not.. .. and there is the "ModdMii did not work for me" problem ...
somehow i did not read that only the English version was still supported.. stupid ..

So again (and hopefully my last) sincere apologies.

i wil try the english version tonight, to update the system and installing USB loader..

i keep you posted

Thanks for your kinds words, I appreciate it, but don't worry, I have thick skin (most of the time) so you don't need to walk on eggshells when talking to me, it's all good.

And you hit the nail on the head, the issue is the Dutch version, and all the non-English versions for that matter are severely outdated. On the bright side, the English version of Modmii supports interpreting syscheck's of any language (well, any language supported by syscheck), but the final guide will still be in English (I am referring to Modmii's syscheck updater wizard, all other wizards are purely English only)

dear xflak..

it seems to be workin! :)
everything dowloaded fine.. and i am almost ready to start!

only one thing is not clear for me at the moment.. do i need to copy the COPY_TO_SD folder to a blank SD card, or should i merge it with the SD card thats currently in use (in the Wii)?

Dont know if there are important "hacking" stuf on it from my previous hack years ago.
and I ve heard save games were stored on the sd card, so i would like to keep this stuff saved..

greatings

You can merge/overwrite if u want to keep your old stuff, just be careful to install ONLY the wads listed in your modmii guide

Edit: gamesaves would be saved to your private folder, unless u used savegame manager gx then those get saved to a different location of the same name

After using modmii you can optionally use its file cleanup feature to remove files from your sd card that are potentially dangerous and u only really need when doing the initial softmod steps. That being said it's only looking to remove dangerous/unnecessary apps supported by modmii, so if you have other potentially dangerous apps on your sd card like any title deleter for example modmii will not remove it. Modmii tells u everything it will do and ask you to confirm twice before deleting anything

alright.. and its working.. got usb loader on the home screen also..

the only weird thing is that when i install usb loader on a 16 usb stick itself, i can start the game, but then it corrupts the entire flash drive.. (afther this happend 3 times, i called it quits)
yesterday when i had usb loader installed on the sd card instead, the same 16 gb stick played games correctly..

i ve read how much problems there are with wii and flash drives but never thought i would be this weird.. i wil try a external hard drive tomorrow , hoping it wil resolve the issue.. and i can start playing metroid!

thnx for al the help..
