i have to think that there's a sticky for EXACTLY this.

but use wbfs manager. also, your sig shows you already using usb loader gx. shouldn't you know?

Do you really want to devote a whole 1TB to games? Seems kinda excessive to me, but it would be easier to just format the whole thing instead of partition it if you don't care to use it for anything else.

Partition it, you'll never need that much space, and there's a 500 game limit anyway from what I've read.
If its a spare drive and you really dont need it for anything else, just use a WBFS manager as said above.

Guessing your a windows user....
Start > Run > compmgmt.msc
Disk Management
Delete Partition
Create New - Change size to 512GB
Quick Format
New Partition - Rest of Space - FAT 32....QUICKFORMAT
all over in 45 seconds

I agree with everyone else. Unless your friend plans on collecting the entire Wii library of games, 1TB is overkill. Did he/she already get the 1TB? If no and he/she really wants a drive for only for the Wii then why not save some money and get a 500GB. If yes then definitely make 2 partitions at least. It would be a lot of wasted space to have the entire hard drive WBFS formatted.

EDIT:
Reread your post and saw it wasn't for you so I changed all the "you" to "your friend" or "he/she".
