for me CIA is more risky than 3DZ, because i think nintendo can check if you purchased that game from the eshop, if not BAN......meanwhile a 3dz with a private header, or better yet, like my case a private dump of MH4U renamed to 3dz is the safest way for me, because is like playing with the original cart.

This is the only absolute way to stay safe from bans. Risk isn't "minimized" otherwise as it can still get lowered. Also don't import.

I am not sure buying games is 100% safe if you buy used games. Although unlikely, there is still a chance of buying a used game that someone dumped the header and is using it privately or leaked it on the web as a public header.

Nope, if a NNID isn't attached to your console they can't do jack shit. Cia is the safest solution so far.

yeh, currently private headers are very safe, just dont share them, if nintendo starts banning people who use private headers I'll start to get scared

GameStop is big on this (Pre-Orders are fine as they do not open them). In fact, GameStop would be the worst place to buy "new" games from as there is a far greater chance that the employees are ripping the games with their own Gateways before selling them as "new".

Just use a private header and you will be fine. I've been fine using a private header since way back and used MK7, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Pokemon, recent MH4 never had any troubles also I unlink the two nands.

Nope, if a NNID isn't attached to your console they can't do jack shit. Cia is the safest solution so far.

I'd say they could still check, not with NNID but with console serial number

kinda like how if you break/lose a console and want to transfer your data to another one you call ninty and give them the serial number of both

1/ When you guys are talking about private header you mean take the header from let's say Mario kart "legit" and apply it to Zelda "pirated" to use it online?
2/ Why is .cia more secure? Is it not only a rom installed locally on your 3DS ?

1. Yup, you're on track.
2. Cia files should be more secure because they do not use headers so when you go online you should be safe. Just don't affiliate your console with any thing that has to do with Nintendo and you're good to go for now.

You can get the updates online. I'm not sure if they are able to distinguish cia files over rom files but if they could I would guess it would be through eshop ie your account. But I guess as long as you don't have a NNID attached to your console you're safe.

if you dump your own game , you can use it without missing with the rom it self and replacing the header for a file you downloaded from the internet

Yeah, you can extract header from any game and you can also patch it to any game to play online.

Im playing online since the release date of MH4U with a 3DZ with a header of a personal copy of the japanese version of the game MH4G, without problems.
