Not paying $30 for something when a free alternative will probably be coming within a month or two. Also waiting until we have a clearer definition of what will and won't get us banned.

I'm specifically interested in whether people get banned from playing backups of legit cartridges that they own, and whether anyone gets banned when playing pirated games offline in case the Switch is keeping a log that it phones home to Nintendo with whenever it goes back online.

Definitely not "eating crow" right now. You'll be the one eating crow when you're banned and those who waited will still be able to play online.
If you pirate why worry for being banned? I really dont care if that happens I still have free games, there is no way to prevent bans 100% because is nintendo that declares the rules

With emunand and only playing your pirated games offline, preventing bans will be possible.

Once we know more about what Nintendo checks and bans for, we can prevent the Switch from sending that data.

I'm personally not really into piracy though, I'd just like to be able to backup my legit cartridges and play them from SD.

Dude if you use emunand, how do you know nintendo doesnt know is emunand? maybe some changes, here and there, their security is far better this time, we dont know if thats going to be enough, the people that know and have experience this type of scenes know that you cannot mix hacks with online, even if you want online, get another console and hack the other

Easy. Have one microSD card with emunand and backups, a separate microSD for using with OFW. Boot emunand with RCM, and stay offline while in emunand. Pretty much every Emunand implementation I've seen manages to redirect all NAND (emmc in this case) writes to a sd card. When done playing backups, shut off the Switch, throw your OFW microSD back in, and launch OFW. You can play online with no fear of getting banned.

And like I said, give us more time and we'll know more about Nintendo's checks and how to circumvent them. So far I don't think anybody has been banned from just using Hekate to launch homebrew and emulators (unless they used homebrew to edit their saves, for stuff like getting early access to Octolings in Splatoon 2).

We had all the time in the world for the 3ds, and they were insecure as hell, and to the date people dont know why they got banned, this time around will be another story man

We have pretty good ideas about how people got banned. People were installing homebrew CIAs with Title IDs that weren't in Nintendo's Database, they were able to see this and ban people for it, so they came out with Rosalina in Luma3DS to mask your homebrew and make it look like you were playing a legit title.

And then there were the obvious bans for people pirating games and playing them early.

My 3DS has the latest version of Luma 3DS, I play online with my backups all the time and have no fear of bans.

Yes, we're now pretty sure why people were getting banned on the 3DS. And yes, they've beefed up the security of the Switch, there will probably never be a safe way of playing pirated titles online, but I'm sure that later we'll figure out how to play backups offline safely with little risk of being banned from playing legit games online.

Dude that is only speculation because nintendo is not actively pursuing again in the 3ds, the 3ds is abandoned, all the info you see is that people were using this and that, but only Nintendo knows for real, but is only speculation, the switch will have like "come use this and that" you are flagged, banned, we will let you play online with this game, flagged and banned, you made a backup and you are using homebrew, flagged and banned, you can say all that about cias and everything but we are just guessing

I have a 3ds, with full pirate games, full homebre cia and I havent been banned, I play online and everything, I am good, so what you say about that?

Wtf are you on about?? I was asking if the meaning was the same as eating humble pie. Did not know asking questions was against the law lol.

I believe eating your hat is another one....lol. Yeah I always liked humble pie myself, sounds tasty, like something they would make in North Carolina.....crows and hats meanwhile do not sound at all tasty.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

The first is true, the second is random speculation, the third is so vague that it's pointless.

I haven't paid for it, I haven't considered paying for it. However the idea there is some moral issue with paying for piracy is ridiculous.

We all paid for our consoles right? Or is it only good if we steal those too?

Umm I have hacked and modded stuff since forever and never caused or had a brick so this guy is just silly.....I guess the only recent reference to bricking is the GW debacle which was no problem at all unless you bought a clone knockoff of GW. I bought one at launch and still use it to this day on my XL. In that case N did not cause bricks, GW did by being pissy about the clones.....big deal

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Or the opposite! :D

Really if you aren't into online who cares.....ban away oh great server in the cloud.

a) There might still be ways around that and other means of logging.

b) Are you sure about that? The lag time between proper custom firmwares for the 360 and stealth setups was rather long (there were plenty of good hackers, plenty of people enjoyed online for it and nothing particularly likely to drag it down). If Nintendo have transformed themselves into that level of opponent, and all indications are that they have (or have that as the starting position at least), then it might well take a while.

I ordered the pro kit last month. I got tired of waiting and ordered the OS license last night from modchipsdirect. The code was in my order noted this morning. All 28 games I have on my SD card work.

Bought 4 pro units. Two for giveaways on here and YouTube, and two for me and my friend. I don’t care if I had to pay for piracy, the convenience of the dongle makes it worth it. And no, I don’t have a android phone and no I will not get one just for sending a payload.

Eating crow????? I'm guessing that is the American version of eating humble pie.
No, this is just jakkal not knowing what phrase to use. I’m from the us and have never heard the phrase “eating crows”.

Gah, etymology and such discussions seem to have a kind of https://xkcd.com/356/ effect on me.

The US has quite a bit of regional variation, more than some expect. Among fans of language then New England's variations makes for a jumping off point but more generally http://popvssoda.com/ for what one might call fizzy drinks tends to be a nice start.

A quote which seems to be attributed to one Mr Thomas Jefferson: “If you have to eat crow, eat it while it's young and tender.”. I could not find a greater context for it in a very quick search though.

I bought it.
I buy my switch releases too.
I'm an adult with a professional career with income to match and $30 is trivial to me.

Why did I buy it? convenience. Once it arrives i'll toss it on the shelf and 6 months from now if things are still working and stable i'll use it to toss some homebrew or emulators on it that I will probably play once every 6 months.
For those who bought it strictly for new software piracy, that's their business, but they aren't helping the industry stay solvent either.

On a side note, I find it interesting how the narrative has changed over the years (or my memory is just fuzzy) however I don't remember people being so toxic back in the old days, I remember debates over which copiers were better.. ( Still need to mod my Dr. Z64....) and everyone was always about waiting for the next crack to come out for n64 titles etc... Fun times.... (sorta) lol.

While I would still maintain that if a system has no games then fighting about trivial nonsense becomes the default the changing positions I might have to look into that.

What I have seen is some point in the DVD era about when things got really easy and before the dummy sectors thing they started sending people into schools similar to those that go in to say don't walk on train lines, don't play with fireworks, don't go near the edges of cliffs, those sweeties from that strange van in the park is the tastiest of all... but for piracy. That was some time ago (certainly enough for people to go entirely through school) and it has not let up since. When then talking to people about going through customs and such with flash carts I noticed a distinct "I am doing something wrong" mentality among those where you or I might be more concerned about leaving it on the table if we have to do a mad dash for the gate and not have even considered it as something untoward.

That said as far as history goes, especially for the GBA, then if you had a flash cart you were already ahead of the plebs using emulators.
