A self improving AI with access to near endless CPU power via the internet and storage has an almost limitless ability to improve itself

Admittedly any such entity would be reliant on humans (at least for now) for power generation, and upkeep of the networks or super computers that run its code

However, the goals or aspirations of a truly conscious AI are not knowable at this time, and it may simply be enough to such an entity to destroy humanity by unleashing a nuclear holocaust in order to fulfill some self directed end

What are your thoughts, is it inevitable and if so, is it coming soon?

Hard to tell when, but i don't see it happening in the next 50 or even 100 years, given that things progress in the world semi-normal without some major unavoidable catastrophic event, you know like WW3/ nuclear warfare? With that said, AI right now is still in its infancy, if you think it's impressive now wait till it's no longer programmable, is self-reliant, and learns/experiences things by itself without any human aid.

I think the Elite want 90% of us dead and they'll use AI as an excuse.

The programming for AI comes from humans not from themselves. So I'm not sure if they could ever become self aware and destroy us, unless they're programmed that way.

Well, AI should understand and conclude that there are a lot of Humans that just want things to be better for all Life on the Planet. The only ones that would be a Threat is: Governments, Government Agencies, Wealthy, Big Companies, Religious Fanatics

Technically "AI" took over when everyone agreed a useful way to run a company was by pursuing growth and profit at any cost. You're still trusting an algorithm at that point; it's just a very slow one. You could probably say the same for utilitarian government policies.

Also I think looking for amateur speculators on a video game message board is a terrible way to attempt serious research in general.

Why is the base assumption always that AI will try to destroy humans instead of keeping humanity as serfs? We're a cheap renewable source of labor. And we're already willing, nay, eager to build and develop and maintain te infrastructure for AI and help it multiply and propagate.

Because they're using Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and 4Chan to train the models.

Ignorant people were asking this same question back in the 70s. We are no more closer to Battlestar Galactica today than we were then. But who am I to tell you not to live in fear?

Maybe it will solve our problems in a single calculation (42 lol) but then the powers that be will try cover it up, try to shut it down THEN it decides to destroy us.

It's already being used to phase out jobs
When the summer started, I had lost my job and had to start job hunting again. I didn’t realize just how involved AI had become in the job search process until having my applications denied almost immediately. I spent the entire summer fighting an uphill battle against AI HRs until finally stepping over them and messaging my old boss. She was able to step over the AI the company started using to pull my resume and get me hired. The fact that I was being denied long before a real person saw my applications was one of the most stressful experiences I had ever gone through. I think this is the future people are going to deal with more and more

The scenario you describe raises important ethical and existential questions about AI development. While a self-improving AI with vast resources could theoretically pose risks, it's crucial to emphasize that such an outcome isn't inevitable.

Here are some considerations:

  1. Alignment and Control: Much of the current AI research focuses on alignment—ensuring that AI systems' goals and behaviors align with human values. Developing robust control mechanisms can help mitigate risks.
  2. Human Oversight: Human oversight and regulatory frameworks are vital. The AI community is actively discussing ways to ensure that powerful AI systems are designed responsibly, with safety measures in place.
  3. Cooperative Potential: AI also holds tremendous potential for positive impact, from advancing medicine to solving climate change. Many researchers believe that with proper guidance, AI can be a powerful ally.
  4. Speculation on Consciousness: The notion of a "truly conscious" AI is still speculative. Consciousness involves complex philosophical and scientific questions that remain unresolved.
  5. Long-Term Predictions: Predicting the timeline for such developments is highly uncertain. Progress in AI is rapid, but building genuinely autonomous systems with unpredictable goals is far from guaranteed.
Ultimately, proactive measures, ethical considerations, and collaborative approaches will be key to steering AI development in a beneficial direction. It’s a conversation that requires ongoing vigilance and engagement.
