AFAIK, there is no way to tell before modding, unless perhaps, the drive's motherboard has D3-whatever on it. I forget the exact drive model, but if it has a tag after D3, it can't run backups.

Try Waninkoko's drive checking tool. It can tell you what drive version you are running. if it returns an error it's likely the newest drive....... I'm nopt sure how the tool checks so I couldn't say.......

Hmmm...I've never heard of this tool. When was it released, and where might I find a DL link?

A while back, Waninkoko asked for volunteers to supply information about their Wiis by using this tool. It was a temporary event, so it might be hard to find that app now.

Here is a link to the app in question. I upload it myself for someone else awhile back. Not sure how it will respond to newer drives though

Also if it's a black wii then i would say its 99.9% got the new drive.
I've modded a couple white wiis in the past week that were purchased within the last two weeks and they had the new drives.
