How do I know if a Wii can read DVDs?

    Hello, my friend just picked up an older, used, virgin Wii on 4.3u. Before we hack it, we'd like to find out if it can read DVDs or not.

    It's no real guarentee (since if the Wii was repaired at some time then the Drive may've been changed) but there is a way to get a better idea to what Drive chip the Wii uses based on the serial number of the Wii

    A quick Google & I found this site and this site

    IIRC it's the D3-2 chip that is unable to play DVD's of any kind, and there are other types that cannot play backup discs (But I'm afraid I don't know which ones those are)

    If its black or red then it will be a D3-2 for sure. If white then check the serial on wiidrives
