...when I don’t want to update the firmware because I don’t want to mess up Homebrew.

I use Homebrew via Soundhax, and my 3DS version is 11.0.0-33U.

I also want to backup & edit my NDS saves through the 3DS method that I found online... or should I just get an R4 card for the DS?

Since you are below 11.3, just use Soundhax+udsploit (check the guide for the steps) and install CFW, then update normally and get the stuff you want from the eshop without fear of losing homebrews or anything! Also, you get to play more than just legit CIAs, as CFW lets you play all CIAs regardless of signatures.
