If you can clean install Windows 2000, you’d have a much easier time since 2000 doesn’t have a floppy disk requirement.

I looked up the Armada 7800 again and realised that some of them replaced the CD drive with a floppy drive (hence my confusion when seeing the drivers on the page).

If you had Windows 2000 on the laptop, Windows XP should be able to run on it. The drivers for the laptop would be included with the install, since it looks like a pretty old device.

How much RAM is in the laptop? I wouldn't run ME. That OS is garbage. You can run XP on a Pentium 2. I had an old desktop that had a P2 250MHz in it and it ran fine. I was only running 512MB of RAM at the time. Your P2 would only be 300 MHz by the way. GHz didn't come out until the P3's. Wow I feel old LOL. Talking about MHz and MB of RAM.

i beleieve the drivers require a floppy disk to install
To quote the installation instructions for the 2000 drivers:

HOW TO USE:

  1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive. The file downloaded is a self-extracting executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.
  2. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. Entering "Y" to confirm the unpacking of files creates a new directory folder in the download directory. All files are unpacked into this newly created directory.
  3. After the directory has been created, you may delete the self-extracting file downloaded in step 1.
  4. To install, run SETUP.EXE. For example, enter: (path)\SETUP where (path) is the drive and directory created in step 2. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. After the installation is completed, you may delete the directory created in step 2 if you wish.
.......in other words, no floppy needed.

Just for curiosity, why are you trying to use an SD card for a HDD? You won't see any performance increase and it will probably be slower then running a standard drive.
actually i see a huge improvment

Depending on the SD card, it’s speed will either be significantly lower than IDE, or nearly equivalent to the limit of 133MBs. The advantage of SD over spinning rust drives is the faster cache.

@OP, Take your time installing and testing. I’m working all night so I’ll check back from time to time.

You can easily add a wifi internet connection to that laptop using a pcmia wifi card. they are pretty cheap. I added internet connections to my old pentium 2 laptops all the time. they you can transfer files over the network
