The portability of the micro would probably be one of the reasons why it is wanted so much. Imagine having a small, light-weighted handheld in your pocket and being able to bring it out with ease whenever you want to play. The downside of this is the GBA flash-carts. It takes a loooooooong time to just save a file, and having too many gba games in a directory makes the game menu load for quite a while...

They are definitely rare. Almost none of the game shops in my country carry them anymore, and even if they do, they're very expensive.

Anyways of modifying it to play gb and gbc games?

Btw I just picked one up on eBay $35 with super card and 2gb mem but had no faceplate. I talked the lady down telling her it's nearly impossible to find a faceplate for it. So yeah $35 not bad if I say so my self. Also bought a Pokemon blue for $26. Couldn't find it cheaper. And hopefully in 6days a gbsp with pokemom yellow.

I pre-ordered a Micro at GameStop.

On the day of release, I had to take 2 buses and a subway to get there.

The guy behind the counter laughed at me. He thought I was a huge idiot for ordering such a "useless" console.

In fact, my unit was the only one the store had ordered.

Initially, I was suped impressed with it. Everyone that saw me with it thought I was retarded. However, I went the flashcart+goomba route, and I started to find that the screen was just too small for some games. I wasn't having much fun with it.

So, I sold it.

Then it becomes popular.

That's right

I liked it before it was cool.

I remember this picture and got all excited about wanting one.

Then it released at $99.99 and the SP was $79.99 and was coming out with a better backlight. I bought the SP, then bought a few micros when they were $49.99 at my Wal-mart.

I was considering pick up one a while ago but backed out thankfully. Personally I felt it wasn't worth it for example the small screen size(Yes it's called Gameboy MICRO for a reason) but then I remembered how terrible it is to play GBA games on a DS lite was. The reason was to buy either a Micro or SP to have as an inexpensive game console for example if it were to get lost of stolen. The second thing was that it couldn't play old school GB and GBC games, as I have Poke'mon Yellow. I ended up with an SP and the only CON it has is that it doesn't have an headphone port  but I am extremely happy with it :yaysp:.

There was also a resurgence in popularity when the DSi came out, which doesn't have a GBA Slot-2.

As mentioned already, it's because it was a flop.

The Micro itself was never a bad handheld, but it just got released at a really bad time so it was quickly overshadowed by the DS, which also played GBA games.

Why are they wanted so much? Because they are really nice. It is the true definition of a portable handheld game experience. Plus the interchangable faceplates meant you could essentially 'pimp' it up to look different.

It's kind of like the PSP Go. The GO wasn't really a bad console (Except for some peoples complaints of hand cramps while playing) but it came out at a bad time, and did not offer any real reasons to take it over the other systems released by Sony around the same time (PSP 3000 series).

Usually if the initial sales run goes bad and the item disapears off the shelves, it might be wanted by someone down the track for collectors purposes, or because homebrew/hacking has made it much better than it was at release :P

It didn't flop just because of the DS.

Why it flopped:
It originally cost more than a GBA SP, with less functionality. Tiny screen, no GB/GBC support. Everybody thought it was pointless to own.

Why it's now popular:
People, especially collectors, love owning items that flop..

It's ridiculous that "people love owning items that flop". Maybe some do, but there is nowhere near the demand for the Virtual Boy that there is for the GBM. Why is that? VB was a huge flop. And where's the demand for PSP Go? How come people aren't knocking down doors to get GCN Bongo controllers?

Personally I adore my GBM for reasons completely unrelated to it's flopping -- it's tiny, weighs next to nothing and takes up almost no space in my pocket, and it plays GBA games, which are awesome.

I gave away my Virtual Boy. Unlike the GBM, it's no fun to play and has crap games.

I imagine there might be some small demand for the GBM based on it's initial flopping, but if it had a handful of crap games and was impractical and unfun I bet you'd see much less demand.
