I read somewhere that the drive is different or something on the Wiis from launch and they somehow changed the drive in later makes of the wii. What exactly makes a launch wii more special than a newer wii? Is it just the drive or is there other changes that were made?

The older Wiis had DVD drives that, when properly hacked, allowed the said Wii to play burnt Wii games on discs. However, Nintendo caught this and took those drives out of the newer Wiis, leaving us with just USB backups.

I don't particularly like burning my games, so getting a new Wii is good as long as you have an external HD.

Well I dont even like using backup disks in the first place as I play all my backups through USB. If thats the only loss then I guess its not that big of a deal.

Because new Wii systems cannot play disc backups, GameCube backup loading without a WODE or an SD Gecko is out of the question. One is also unable to play DVD movies on his or her Wii using an application such as WiiMC.

As far as I know, older wii's can have bootmii/boot2 and they can play burnt dvds. Bootmii/boot2 is real useful since it can fix any non-hardware related brick and you can do it yourself instead of sending it to someone for repairs. And I like being able to play burnt dvds, usb loading is awesome until your hard drive eventually fails.

DVD debug code in drives (backups), boot2 is vulnerable (BootMii), Wiis with serial numbers below LU64 can be downgraded past 3.4, thats about it.

    Just to add dates:
Mid-2008: Boot1 vulnerability is fixed, so bootmii as boot2 is no longer possible.
September 2009: Nintendo starts using D3-2 drive chips, so playing disc backups and DVD movies are no longer possible.

At EB games in Australia a new Wii with Mario kart costs $199 but a pre -owned one with no games is $146!

EB obviously know about wii hacking!
