Can I use QCMA or is the save file kept on the system?

The save file is kept on the system in the folder ux0:user/00/savedata/gameid

sorry for the late reply but this means I don't need to backup on QCMA when I delete correct (though I guess it'd make it easier to get the game back)

by the looks of it, backing up that folder through FTP would let you keep your saves, since they get deleted with the game. when you reinstall the game, you should get the gameid, look for the right folder, and put the saves back into the system. hopefully it'll still read the saves, and not have more licensing/encryption bs to prevent it from working. otherwise QCMA would be the only way to keep them backed up
