I was on xbox live before the newest dash came out, And before it did I had my friend flash my 360. Now a few days later that new dash came out, I am currently on K2.0.15574.0. Is it safe for me just to log into live and get the update and will it still read disc afterwards? Thank you and sorry I am a noob in the 360 scene. But I do know why way around the PS3 scene, But apples and oranges. Also I heard rumors of a new RGH, So would I be better off staying were I am ?

Just update. No recent updates reflash your disc drive.

If you want it RGH'd then you might want to keep 15574.
Xecuter claimed to have glitched 16197, I personally think that 16197 is no different then 15574 but for safety just keep 15574.

If you want XBLive and want to update then you can update via USB.
Just download the sysupdate from the Xbox site and plonk it on a USB.
Boot the console and accept the update.

LT 3.0 will stay on your DVD drive and is Live safe for 16197.
That is if you patch your backups and burn then with a iHAS burner and don't cheat with saved games etc.

    Welcome.

RGH consoles can play every XBLA game.
As well as XBLindie games with the recent Dashlaunch 3.0 and FSD 3.0 (it'll be located under Homebrew)

To be safe, I always flash my DVD drive back to stock before doing the OTA update.

I've tried a couple of times to do the USB dashboard update, but this has never really worked for me. So to be ready, I flash to stock, then boot up to perform the OTA update, verify the Xval before and after, then reflash the DVD drive proper.

That's indeed the proper way of doing it.

However usually a USB update will suffice (just remove LAN/USB from the console to prevent it going to Live)

Oh believe me, I've tried. But after a couple of times, it would either fail the update, give me an E74 error, or flip out like it was going to flag me for a ban. The Xval has at least checked out clean since then, so I just don't know what the hell happens with my machine.

It probably struggles to update then.
    USB drive "fast" enough?
Tried formatting the HDD and then updating it?
Tried the update with a USB drive formatted as a 360 MU?

    Also Xval isn't really reliable.
It only gives a slight indication of your console being not flagged/banned.

Well, so far, my X value has remained unchanged, with according to its calculations show my secdata is as fresh as from the factory.

Why should I reformat my HDD just to update? that makes no sense whatsoever.

    Xval isn't really reliable.
A far more reliable method is this

It could be a conflicting TU or SysExt. file.
You never know since a 360 can panic on pretty much everything.
I also had accessing me Syssettings, turned out some files in the Sysext partition where corrupted.
Luckily I could delete the partition and reapply an update but on a retail console I would need to format me HDD.
