Hacking Homebrew channel doesn't open unless I disconnect usb drive

It may sound stupid, but are you sure your harddisk is plugged in the correct usb port.
To my knowledge, cios 222 can use both which could explain why it works with that.
As explained above, the homebrew channel uses ios 58, unless that one isn't installed.
In that case it can use ios 61, but that will only have slow usb 1.1 support.

Maybe you could give the "homebrew filter" program a try. It can do pretty much the same as the homebrew channel.
If the option to choose the harddisk is grayed out in the hbc, it means the hbc can't see your harddisk.

Another option is Postloader. Recently rev. 4 came out.

hbc 1.08 behaved strange as well in my case. When I selected the harddisk, it returned showing the sd card apps.
Upon the next reboot of my wii, it showed the usb apps fine.
The program remembers the last setting, so if you selected usb, I don't think it will revert to sd when a card is inserted.
This might explain why it only worked if you unplugged the usb drive.

What harddisk are you using? Maybe others have the same and can report everything working fine with them. (or not)
