Hogwarts Legacy - State of Play coverage roundup, game confirmed for release on Nintendo Switch

A 22-minute State of Play has aired, dedicated solely to the upcoming Harry Potter video game Hogwarts Legacy. The video shows a fair amount of gameplay, as you create your own character within the universe, who starts at Hogwarts as a 5th-year student. Your professors will teach you how to be a wizard during the day, and after class, you can explore the school. It takes place in the late 1800s.

There are also dungeons you'll be able to go to and fight monsters in. The combat system employs plenty of magic spells for you to learn and use against your enemies. You can use charms and enchantments to block attacks and fight back against more defensive foes. Weaknesses and resistances to spell types will need to be exploited in order to win. Crafting is in the game as well, along with skill trees for you to adapt to your playstyle. Magical beasts can be petted and can assist you in battle, with some that can be captured and saved from poachers. Broomstick travel is how you get around the world quickly, or on flying creatures.

Companions with their own stories can be recruited. Players will eventually unlock a piece of land that lets you build your own house and design it yourself. Locations outside the school have stores where you can buy clothes and equipment. As time passes in the game, seasons will change and affect how the world looks.

Hogwarts Legacy will be out this holiday season. Beyond the State of Play video, the publisher also confirmed that the game would be coming to the Nintendo Switch, alongside the previously announced platforms of the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Those with concerns about in-game purchases or microtransactions after their implementation in other Warner Bros. published single-player games will be relieved to learn that it has also been confirmed that microtransactions will not be in Hogwarts Legacy.

Regarding the lack of microtransactions, fans asked why Hogwarts Legacy uses real-time timers for crafting, to which the community manager for the game merely reiterated the fact that there are no microtransactions, leaving some wondering if it's just a mechanic to balance the game, or if WB is going to implement a form of monetization that isn't specifically microtransactions.

Yea, no way this will run on Switch! :rofl2:
Other than that, the game looks excellent! Really the HP based game we've been waiting for for years.. the rpg elements are really appreciated, great atmosphere, world design.. i'm not sure how the combat system works exactly, with different elemental powers, tricks & maneuvers, but overall looks really solid!

I'd like the combat system to be like in the Order of the Phoenix game
On pc you used the mouse, the way you moved it would trigger a different spell
For example, a simple fast move downside would trigger Accio while a fast move upside would trigger Repulso
Moving it from left to right would trigger Petrificus Totalus
Making a circle clockwise would trigger Stupefix
Etc etc
I loved that system because you couldalso do it on wii, by moving the wiimote in different way, and xbox/playstation, by moving the joystick

Could be, though from what they've shown it's instantaneous and without any menu/or spell wheel, also with all the variety/amount of spells shown, it could get very complicated if they used a similar system.

I wish they would confirm it's not cloud. Or cloud. Just make it clear, and not cloudy with the chance of meatballs.
I don't remember any game where they said it would be released for Switch without talking about cloud version, but ended un being cloud version.

I mean, all cloud games I know were advertised as such, even stating it in the box art and the name of the game, since they were announced. Control. Hitman. Guardians of the Galaxy. Kingdom Hearts.

Good to know. They're also supposed to by a cart version, so it's prolly a solid port after all

It would be very deceiving of them not to even say in the press release that it's indeed a Cloud Version.

And then, there is this. No sign of "cloud version" tag in the Box Art.

I hope the same as you. People seem to forget some ported games that seemed impossible on Switch because of graphics, but then there are some examples, like Hellblade, where they made a solid port without many issues other than some worse graphics. Also Doom and its sequel.

Well, it's a crossgen title, not nextgen exclusive, so it should be possible. Even openworld games like witcher and outer worlds are playable, especially after the patches.

It doesn't have very "good" graphics even in the PS5 trailer. So, not as farfetched. People and faces 3D models look from the PS3 era, with only some environments looking top notch.

Damn, does this game look cool. I wasn‘t really expecting it to more in depth than just being a story-based game.

I hope the combat is as in depth as the world they’re creating. The last Harry Potter game I played was more in the lines of a third person shooter which was cool but felt limited for a game about magic. I also remember one that used the right stick to cast different spells which was very cool. Also, can multiplayer be a thing pls

I find no reason to make it cross-gen if it doesn't have some kind of multiplayer. But hey, strange things happen.

I'm hust hoping for that. Never said "for sure it will be a cloud version". Also, very deceiving if they didn't say it in the press release in their website.

Everyone saying it will be a Cloud version for sure is as wrong as me hoping for it not to be one, because there's no way to tell right now.

dude he just said he didn't feel the game looked good, no need to be so passive aggressive

Pretty certain you don't know what passive aggressive means, because my post was not an example of it. They didn't just say they didn't think it looked good. They questioned why anyone else would be interested in it, hence my comments. The "slow" comment also seems strange coming from a person that platinumed Death Stranding, twice.

Dude, I just made talking points with the person after they questioned why anyone else would be excited for this game. No need to be so passive aggressive.

People act like this is a next-gen exclusive when it's also coming to PS4 and XB1. So there's no guarantee it's a cloud version for Switch, though odds are pretty high. If it is a cloud version, nobody in their right mind should be paying $60 for it, $30 at launch should be the maximum price point for such an inferior experience. Sadly that's not how the gaming industry tends to view things.
