hitbox, smashbox. whats the difference? and what about an arcade stick?

while checking out arcade sticks and modding them, i found hitboxes and smashboxes. anyone use one of these boxes? why do you like them? are they really that much better (for certain games)?

Well some people feel that certain inputs are easier to perform by using digital keys instead of an analog stick.
