Well, the situation comes down to this.

I have a friend who owns a laptop (Internet, don't know her actually).

Just yesterday, she closed her laptop, making it hibernate, went downstairs to her living room, came back up two hours later and she reports that her laptop was making a sort of "Cracking Popcorn" sound.

I asked how oftenly she did this, and she said she does this around.. 3 times a week, no more, no less, other times she turns it off.

She also says it's like her HDD isn't detectable, not to mention if she tries to boot up without the HDD, it won't turn on (I know zero-to-nothing about Laptops, nor am I an average on normal computers, so kill me).

She has this Laptop since last January, what the hell is this problem? Or better yet, what should she do?

Thanks in advance guys.

can i get a list of details to better know why this happened ?

-brand and model
-where it was purchased
-where the laptop was sitting
-was on battery, ac adapter, both
-shared the laptop
-can the damage of the laptop be seen from the outside
-was the laptop damaged some way before, try to recall

w/o that info i would spend a lot of time assuming

at the moment i think the fix is:
exchange the laptop that is under warranty
if you have data that you want to keep from the hard drive, you can get a hard drive enclosure for the laptop hard drive. i did a quick search and cant suggest a good one but you can see what you can choose here
http://search.ebay.com/2-5-enclosure_W0QQs...2e5Q20enclosure

drawbacks to this:
wait time, shipping costs depending on the customer service

When it hibernates, its the same as shutting down except program data and such is stored in memory. The problem is either the ac adapter or the battery.
