Heya, I've found a way to have EmuNAND still running while the SD card is removed. This is useful if you want to mess about with files on your SD card without having to turn off your system, which is also more helpful for anyone still using Menuhax as their entrypoint to CFW.

Basically all you have to do is open the Nintendo 3DS Camera App, go into your photos and you can remove your SD card from there, which you'll probably get a message saying "The SD card has been removed, photos will be saved onto the System" or something like that. NOTE: If you exit the app or go to the camera mode while the SD is still removed, you'll get the "The SD Card has been removed" blackscreen and you'll be forced to restart your 3DS.

Also from what I've heard and tried myself, this also works with FBI and The Homebrew Launcher running but this method is useful for everybody since everybody has the camera app installed.

What CFW are you using? It works fine with ReiNand.

When exiting, it will still be in emuNAND?

Also, I'm asking, because whenever exiting Miiverse/internet browser or anything, it goes to sysnand.

I guess Gateway has extra stuff in the background running on the SD at all times.

Huh. How about that. It's working for me on 10.6 CakesFW too. Nifty.

Just a quick tip though, if you have any custom themes installed via extdata, doing this will remove it. But if you reboot into emunand, it comes right back :)

Hello! ^_^ When modding up my 2DS, I accidentally discovered an easier way to do this...

Just open up the Home Menu Settings menu (house/wrench icon in the upper left corner). You can then remove your SD Card without crashing/freezing the system.

I've been doing this any time I've needed to take out the SD Card. It has given me "An error has occurred" message 1 time out of probably a dozen or so attempts since discovering the trick.

I wonder what causes this behavior...

I mean, at least the way I think about it, ripping out the SD card while in an emuNAND session would be akin to yanking out the physical NAND chip on the 3DS itself, and one would assume that would cause catastrophic problems. I really wonder what it is that these apps do that unmount emuNAND so that the SD card can be removed safely.

I would recommend against this, you would not rip the NAND chip out of the 3DS while it's on; there is a chance to damage something with this.

I would assume that these apps suspend Nand/EmuNand operations while active, thus no accessing the info on the SD card. Using my method, when you replace the SD card and exit the menu, the screen flashes and it usually unloads any theme as it tries to catch up with the info on the SD. I think this is more closely related to removing the game disk from you xbox/wii/etc while playing than ripping out the Nand chip.

The difference being that discs are read only, while the SDcard is being read/written too. Doing this could cause data corruption.

Well, the fact that it doesn't freeze up like when you pull the card out on the home menu would suggest that it has suspended all sd card access, as well. Pulling it while it's reading or writing is presumably why it freezes.

i gotta agree....maybe camera app allows change of sd card, if your card becomes full, and you gotta change it for one with more space....
