I get it to connect fine, and the desktop shows up on my DS, but after that none of the buttons respond at all and I can't do anything other than look at the tiny desktop on my DSLites screen...

Try customizing the buttons and press Start or Select(forgot which one) and select your custom buttons.
It's a good gamepad, I played Super Smash Flash with it.

You can play a game on the PC with it. The screens will go off to save battery. You could try certain flsh games, and maybe even a bigger game. Like I don't know, and run some emulators with it.

i jsut re-started using win2ds not too long ago i dont really like the virtual desktop as much as gamepad mode
the virtual desktop kinda lags the mouse as well as the zoomed screens "for me"
but i like gamepad since it controls ur computer keys not the game itself
plus i like to play small flashgames on the net which makes it really fun like a wireless game controller

as for your problem have checked if it reacts on ur real pc desktop
or possibly go into the menu and change the custom keys to see if it works

many problems may be associated with lag differences between the pc server and ur ds
