Or if you are refering to using old R4 .sav files in an AK(with AKAIO)which uses .nds.sav

just go to system settings and go along until you find where it says save type-.nds.sav

change this to .sav and then when you start your game you save files will work (provided they are named correctly aswell)

I did this and it worked for me

First make sure the save file is the same type supported by your EDGE. If you downloaded the save from GameFAQs, for example, you'll need to convert it from Action Replay Max to EDGE format. Use this online converter to do the trick: http://www.shunyweb.info/convert.php

Then, rename the save so that's the exact same name as the ROM file. For example, the rom would be: ROMNAME.nds and the save would be: ROMNAME.sav
(if you have Vista or Windows 7, you don't need to worry about the .nds and .sav)

Lastly, make sure the ROM and save file are in the same folder of your microSD.
