Hello,

I'm very new to the translation scene and don't know much about translating DS games. but I really would like to try and translate Goemon DS as the game is a gem that has been forgotten by F**konami.

I have already read through the Ultimate Nintendo DS rom hacking guide but I'm still having trouble with this game.

I have tried crystalTile to extract the files, Tile Molester to edit any of the unpackaged files from DSLazy. but everything appears broken.

I have even started trying to enter the hex code with CrystalTile but haven't been having much luck.

Any ideas?

I opened it using tinke (I recommend it, it's very useful) And I found a bunch of .dat files (either compressed using .lz .rl, there's even a .huff there). Those dat files hold many things (either graphics, or script). There's also a bunch of overlays too.

Here's a pic. I can't help much, but I found a thread that has a information about .dat files, check it out: https://gbatemp.net/threads/help-translating-a-game.291069/

.dat files are mostly different in different games. (It's a generic name for data, like .bin for binary, etc.) I don't think the thread you link to share anything in common with this game.

Anyway, there's this old thread. (I'm assuming there's only one Goemon game for DS.)

And this quote makes it sound very difficult to hack. (But the thread was from a long time ago, so there might be more people who are capable of modifying it nowadays.)
This game would require heavy amounts of recoding to suite an english translation such as modifying the intro to print left to right instead of up to down right to left.

Not to mention it uses a non standard format for the text meaning someone would need to make a table file for it with all its kanji which in itself would take months.

Sorry but i dont think many people would be willing to invest that much time in this project, but please feel free to prove me wrong.

I found that thread a while back. While translating this game did sound like a challenge, I thought my best bet would be to first translate small things like the controls, signs, and items. I was going to do the Title or any section with downward scrolling text last as it would take the most amount of work to fix.
