Tell him/her to use iFile to navigate around on his iPhone's folders.
Wait shit no Cydia...umm...crap. Well....tell him/her to find a way to get iFile on their device if they don't have it already! Haha. All I can think of.
Best idea I can think of is to restore to 3.1.2 again (or possibly 4.2 if he wants to) and re-jailbreak. Sounds like something went wrong while loading Cydia.
Why not just restore then update to 5.0.1 Then Jailbreak and unlock it using easyra1n? That is the best option.
Iphone 3G can't have 5.0.1 because apple stopped support at 4.2.1.
Ahh sorry, then upgrade to 4.2.1 unlock, then jailbreak using Redsn0w, or Limera1n
Well it's looking like a restore might be necessary. I'm not sure if you can do the Shift+Restore thing in iTunes without DFU mode, which you can't enter without the sleep button, so you may have to upgrade to 4.2.1 instead of 3.1.2. However, I have an idea you can try as a last resort before restoring. JailbreakMe.com will work on a 3G with 3.1.2, and it should add the necessary features that would allow iFunbox etc to view all folders and not just the jailbroken ones. You could then go over to the /var/whatever folder directly and delete the files you don't want (no need to install SSH to do that when iFunbox will work). Of course, it's best to have OpenSSH/OpenSSL installed eventually, but do that from within Cydia once you get it booting correctly.
CAUTION: I do not know what the effects will be when overwriting blackra1n with JailbreakMe, nor do I know if it will fully work glitch-free. This is a last-resort suggestion only.
