Help! Concerning my new external HDD!!

I just got a new 160GB external USB HDD, and sometimes, the drive makes vibrating sounds and little clicks. Is that normal? It sometimes sounds like my Wii, but just not as violent. The clicking sound is basically... it sounds like the disk and stopping, then going, then stopping, then etc... It sounds like its reading something. My concern is, is that normal? Should the drive be making those sounds or should it be silent?

Does it do it when you add files? Like big files?

Not at all, and my Wii doesn't make clicking sounds either.

Under no circumstance should a hard disk "make sounds" or vibrate when in operation. From experience, (internal HD) the clicking sounds indicate a dieing hard disk.

My advice is to quickly claim warranty or give it back to the shop you purchased it from for an exchange before your hard disk dies.

I have a 3 year warranty.

The drive is working fine, but it makes some "chug, chug" sounds.

BTW its a Kaser 160GB 3.5" StorageVault


EDIT: RIght now its standing vertically, should I try sitting it horizontally?

The external 200gb harddrive I got a while back on ebay has a maxtor inside. I can hear it clicking slighly, but it doesn't vibrate. The 500gb western digital I've got you can't hear at all. If it doesn't invalidate your warrenty, I would be tempted to open the case up and see if the harddrives firmly in the external case.

Turns out the vibrating noise was caused by my stand, which wasn't holding by HDD that tightly.

I set it on its side, and the noise is significantly less.
