HDMiKey allows Wii gamers to connect their Wii to any display with an HDMI or DVI input. It also has a dual analog/digital optical audio output, for hooking up the Wii to state of the art sound systems. The default output signal is 480p, same as the Wii, which works best with most modern LCDs that has internal upscaling. But HDMiKey also offers user selectable internal upscaling to up 1080p.

Seems good but really need hdmi quality for wii games ?

Wiikey team desperate now modchips are pretty much dead?
Wonder how much they lost on the fusion. Their own fault for delaying it so bloody long and the countdown timer shit they pulled for it

I dont think its a bad product per se

the upscaler is nice to have in case the one in your display is crap
but the point is not the signal quality but the signal format

there are many displays with only dvi, hdmi and/or vga (think monitor)

plus its better to use digital transmission if you use really long cables

If it's just the connectivity that is needed then the product is a necessity, but I would not recommend such product for the up-scaling features as they are usually lacking from the capabilities integrated in modern TV's and A/V receivers. Also the price would determine if the product is worth the purchase. A quick look at MonoPrice and you find many similar devices hovering around $40(US). Oddly though on MonoPrice I was able to find a Component (YPbPr) & S/PDIF Digital Coax/Optical Toslink Audio to HDMI Converter and a Composite and S-Video + Analog Stereo Audio to HDMI Converter but not a Component (YPbPr) + Analog Stereo Audio to HDMI Converter...go fig.

Agreed w/ PPS and, in fact, you shouldn't even use one of these if you don't need it since it'll introduce a delay in control responsiveness (the cheaper they are, the bigger the likely delay). A lot of TVs produced now, in fact, have modes that disable a lot of the fancy upscaling doohickery for this exact reason.

Forget the upscaling - being able to connect your wii to a display using a HDMI port can be useful. If the price is right this could be a handy thing to have.

Yes but that type of thing has been available for ages by different companies.
And the upscaling they all offer tends to be a bag of shite, and thats what I reckon this will be.

I've never got upscaling. I can't see how anything with a resolution of 480 lines can be stretched to 1080 lines with no loss of quality.

"Flash Updateable" - What would the point of this be?

As for the product itself, don't really see the point, you can only upscale an image so much. But I guess it's good if you don't have a free component input.

well upscaling is not perfect but the only other options are
really BIG black borders
big as in more than 80% of the area if using 1080p
or buying a sd display to sit beside your hd one

your not listening it won't be in 1080p i've used a similar device like this in the past and my tv still says it's running on 480p. only thing it does is make the games a little more sharp and vibrant.

Here's a review someone made on a similar product: Wii2HDMI

If it improves it a bit on a 1080p TV, I might get one in the future if it's not that expensive.

This device is external video scaler, you already have one in the tv, why do you need a second?
Because some HDTV LCD's have rubbish upscaling capabilities, it's like buying a rubbish £20 upscaling compatible HDMI DVD player compared to that of like a well known strong piece of kit which would be more than £50.

My Viewsonic HDTV doesn't have the best upscaling capability whilst using component cables, but i just state the issue lies with the wii, which we all know it is.

Perhaps this external upscaling device may help picture clarity and actually hide Anti Aliasing jaggies which are a big issue when playing wii games. If it does, then i'd be willing to purchase it. Another thing is when using component cables on a larger TV your bound to see more blocky textures unlike if you were using a scart which acts like a CRT in which it hides them, this would be a good thing too.

And it's from Wiikey, who are a reasonably respectable team.
