First of all: I have an active upscaler cable with the mcable chip from Marseilles. This cable upscales from 480p to 1080p flawlessly and produces a very crisp image. But it can't handle 480i or interlaced signals in general. I'm searching for an HDMI adapter/converter for the PS2 that outputs a 480p signal. I know that there are PS2 to HDMI adapters/dongles on Amazon that do the job, but do those always output 480p or just with games that support progressive scan? As far as I understand they tap into the component signal of the PS2 but output 480p only if a game supports progressive scan. One idea would be progressive (+ widescreen) patching the games. These patches were written for use in PCSX2 if my memory serves me right, but this should also work on the real hardware right? Would then every progressive patched game automatically output 480p? Or doesn't that work?
If not: are there converters that take RGB instead of tapping into the PS2's component signal and output/convert to 480p instead? I think I've seen some youtuber presenting/testing the pound cable, but it converts the 480i RGB signal (or even the composite signal - which would be horrible) to 720p, but I want 480p since my mcable should do the upscaling. I DON'T want anything else do the upscaling but my mcable. Is there something which basically deinterlaces but doesn't upscale?
Edit: Retrotink2X seems to be out off stock in the only EU based shop that offers it. Damn. But that would be exactly what I'm searching for.
