This doesn't remove the malware that causes the issue. It's there by design.

Yes, but that means you can't update Tinfoil past 3.x. Future Tinfoil updates will be required for HBG and others to work.

Its not HBG which is the problem it is tinfoil which is the problem. Tinfoil comes bundled with this malware. HBG chooses to use non modded tinfoil while BigPP uses the modded tinfoil which has the malware removed.

I updated it with a new link!

For those wondering the mod I linked above and the mod Big PP uses are both the same. I just tried out BigPP for the first time and I gotta say that it is better than HBG. It is pretty much the same as HBG but with first party games and no malware. I did however notice that it does take a decent while longer for BigPP to boot up compared to HBG.

So, can I just drag and drop this to the switch folder and have it work... or do I need to do some tinkering?

The "tinfoil from tinfoil.io" IS what HBGshop and BigPP use, just bundled with specific locations. Current tinfoil has the exact same drm.

You drag and drop. Then boot into it and it will give you a device id. You then go into your mod config .ini file and put in your Id where it says to. I have a better explained guide a page or two back.

Big PP uses the modded tinfoil with all the DRM removed while HBG uses non modded tinfoil with DRM.

Much appreciated, I hope blawar can now see the backlash of his decisions from the responses in this thread.. though I doubt anything will change.

Is there a GitHub or a source for the mod you have graciously provided? I'm also wondering how someone releases a modified version of a closed-source application. Or is the ini file where all the magic lies?

Edit: Wouldn't you also need to then make sure to launch tinfoil through hbl via a game (full ram access) so it doesn't crash when it tries to allocate more than it can? Or is that not a concern?

Sorry for the questions and this has probably been answered many times. When I download a Nsp through the HBG shop does it retain the file on the sd card so I can reinstall it in the future , or is it similar to the Eshop where I would have to redownload to reinstall . Many thanks in advance .

HBG does not keep the NSP file.

No criticism for atmosphere that started this mess? :)

Also, the latest release supports high memory mode title override, update.

Not that I know of. I got the mod from hbg reloaded but Big PP also uses it. I'm not sure how they did it but I'm guessing through changing hex values. The ini file is just used to configure the mods. I think that you need to use a forwarder or use full ram access. I have never tried using it without full ram access so it might work.

@connivence RE'd the Tinfoil binary, compiled his own program, injected it into Tinoil, then hooked internal tinfoil functions into his + some patches. Its pretty hard to defend against heh.

Can you elaborate on what you mean here?

It seems a bit strange to say a release of tinfoil supports this; we're not running tinfoil as our CFW. As I see it, it's including files that modify our CFW such that it removes functionality (until you add it back in, I guess?), and refusing to run otherwise. Your average user isn't going to be able to understand/consent to this. Again, I am not sure what mess you're referring to, but I can't understand from what position this might make sense. You don't have a right to modify people's CFW -- and as far as I saw from the diffs, one of your edits seems to enable all homebrew to view product info, which it makes perfect sense for any CFW to restrict.

EDIT: Actually, here's a thought experiment for you: what if Goldleaf removed Tinfoil on install, and refused to run with it installed? Would that be bullshit to you, and how is it, in principle, different from what you are doing?

The reason this only affects atmosphere, is because atmosphere has been implementing more features that cause problems: the bis write protections, reducing applet memory usage by 30%, and to a lesser extent changing album hotkey behavior with no way to revert back to previous behavior.

How do those changes negatively affect Tinfoil?

Bad analogy, a better on would be: what if my software removed goldleaf, then installed a slightly modified fork, then refused to run if it wasnt present. I would not have a problem with this, as its still my software, and no rebranding was done.

bis write affects incognito, reducing applet memory causes tinfoil to crash in applet mode on atmosphere.

I disagree that it's a bad analogy; modifications that fit the other author's motives are being done to software they don't write or have any kind of authority over (and by extension, implied permission from the user to modify). But you shouldn't be okay with that; it's not really your software as intended, it's been modified -- and with who-knows-what.

That is a terrible reason, changes to tinfoil should remain within the scope of tinfoil. Make it so incognito makes those changes to atmosphere, and all the requirements can be in there. Shouldn't we not be running in applet mode in the first place? That said, what is their rationale for the change?

EDIT: Well, whatever. Where I'm at is that Tinfoil was my preferred application for its purpose. nut is awesome, and it's way more intuitive to run that and specifically list stuff I want to via USB than the bizarre user flow Goldleaf/Goldtree have with allowing access to the entire system and making you navigate to where your files are. But *ANY* homebrew app modifying my CFW violates my sense of trust, and my security policy. Apps perform functions, and I'll gladly find a new app for a given function than allow that. I really, really hope you reconsider your methods here.
