Fairly simple premise, possibly some kind of follow on from https://gbatemp.net/threads/have-you-ever-met-a-100-year-old.487591/

Go through something like https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/docs/refmaps.html and for most developed countries it will say the literacy rate hovers around 99%. Of late I have met a few, usually older, people that are unable to read and write. Typically they grew up and still live in the country. Some may be dyslexic but as the support for such things was... not great up until around 20 years ago and still sucks in some places the chances of a rural school in the 20s-40s is not good either.
Most of them are far from dumb as well, usually have a partner that handles any reading related activities, and they can perform fairly well in their given fields. In my case one was an old farmer who was good at farming, and really quite practical and capable of building things, and another was a pretty decent mechanic for older vehicles.

I am not necessarily talking someone with Down's either. That said if you met someone that lost the ability to read then that is a different matter. What counts as literacy is an interesting discussion in and of itself but I would say for this as a general guideline be fairly generous here.

Song because it is mandatory I guess

Talk some on experiences you may have had that are relevant here.

No, I haven't met Trump ;O;

But really, no I can't really say that I have (of course, excluding young children and mentally challenged and senile old people). Most of the people I know that have difficulty reading are just struggling with things like Dyslexia or autism to a certain degree.

But then, I live in a densely populated area, and as you said most of the time these people who are illiterate without any underlying medical condition are usually located in far, out of the way places that don't have easy access to written text and I simply don't know anyone that lives in those kinds of conditions.

My grandmother was born in a poor village and only went to school for one year. She can read and write numbers but not words. Normally she'll ask her children to read forms and letters to her. Her English is comprehendable but not that great; she speaks with an accent, has a poor vocabulary and bad grammar.

I have met a lot of illiterate people. In my experience, I would say that 1 out of every 2 Americans I have met is illiterate. And, that number is getting worse with each passing year.

Exactly what xpo said.
Seems the numbers are indeed increasing by the year due to children not being able to spell properly anymore and relying to much on predictive text.
Also dumb things like replacing words with single letters and purposely mispronouncing words like "thicc" and what not.

But an actual illiterate person... don't think I can say I met one.

If your throat closes, putting oxygen in your mouth will not solve anything - as you will be introducing oxygen prior to the area of obstruction
  • JuanMena @ JuanMena:
    Just kiss me Kyle.
  • x65943 @ x65943:
You either need to be intubated to bypass obstruction or create a stoma inferior to the the area of obstruction to survive

"Just kiss me Kyle." And I thought all the godreborn gay stuff was a smear campaign
