Have you ever felt like you've lived more in a video game than in real life?

I went fishing for the first time last Saturday. I caught a few tiny fish. It was really rewarding to catch them. It felt pretty cruel though to rip the hooks out of their mouths afterwards.

The whole time all I could think about was how much it reminded me of fishing in zelda/animal crossing/harvest moon in different ways. And I really think catching fish in Ocarina of Time helped me to do it in real life. I knew to pull the rod side to side as I reeled in because I had done it so many times in Zelda.

The first time I drove, shot a gun, ate an eggplant and went kayaking were all done in video games (mario kart, 007 goldeneye, harvest moon 64, super monkey ball2)

And there are many more experiences I would like to do for real that I have only done in a game (horse back riding, flying an airplane, scuba diving etc.)

So what are your experiences like? Have you ever tried something for the first time in real life, and suddenly remembered all of the times you had done it in a video game?

Do you ever feel like you were raised by video games? (I feel this way sometimes tbh)

Are video games for us what TV was for the last generation? (and books before that?)

There are many things people experience vicariously. Part of the appeal of video games is in their escapism; being able to do things that would be, for whatever reason, impossible in real life.

That doesn't stop me from daydreaming about taking on a really epic Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts-style final boss in real life. Ah, well. I have weird aspirations. :(

Also, keep in mind that sometimes video games will inaccurately portray actions, citing artistic license. Can you imagine if I tried to learn to drive based on what I learned from Parappa the Rapper?

If I had to choose a video game to live in, it be mega man battle network. I want net navi and browse the internet with custom mega man characters, and fight pc viruses with battle chips :P

I go fishing all the time during the summer.. and thanks to animal crossing I can recognize a few of the fish even though I don't know much else!

I practically lived in Final Fantasy XI (mmo) during my teen/some adult years. I know more about killing crabs/bunnies in that world than I do being an adult in this one. Wouldn't change a thing though.

Sometimes when I'm at work, giving tasks to my coworkers, I like to imagine this is a tactical RPG in real life.

I see that. Sometimes, just for fun, I'll step back, ponder how much experience I have, assess my inventory, and try to guess what level I'm at. This is coming more from JRPGs than anything else.

I kinda like RPGs for that, though. You have this feeling of autonomy as you embark on this grand adventure, with you being in charge of your stats and equipment. Autonomy is precisely what is lacking in the real world.

Another good game to live in would be sonic adventure, they have emerald coast. Sound godlike to have a vacation. They even have a mystic ruins, nice place for adventure or a camp trip or hide and seek game. They have casinopolis, for gambling and games, and ice cap for some ski or snowboarding. :P

Heh, I'd personally be more interested going Super Saiyan on a water god that's flooding the entire city. But that's just me.
