Hasbro has filed a trademark lawsuit against Asus and its new Transformer Prime tablet. Filed in the Los Angeles federal court. Hasbro responded by saying:

"Hasbro continues to aggressively protect its brands and products and the specific actions we are taking today against Asus underscores yet again Hasbro’s willingness to pursue companies who misappropriate our intellectual property for their own financial gain."

Hasbro seeks damages and a injunction of the Tablet.

Can't exactly blame them. The name immediately brings to mind the cheap Chinese knockoff Transformer toys...

I've seen people completely surprised over this, but I have to ask why. Isn't this result obvious? I might could see Hasbro letting it go if some sort of cross-promotion had been done, but there wasn't. The name was chosen to toe the line, and they clearly stumbled over it.

WOW This is stupid. It's like Sega suing someone for using the name "Sonic". It doesn't work like that Hasbitch. ASUS doesn't have anything to signify a relation to your shitty robots. If ASUS used the Autobot or Decepticon logo then a lawsuit would make some sense.

The name is derrived from latin, meaning trans (across, beyond) and forme (formation), it has nothing to do with Transformers the brand whatsoever.

Hasbro could just as well start suing manufacturers of actual transformers on the same basis. Their claim is bogus.

The point is not that it can be connected, that is obvious or Hasbro would not have thought of suing. The point is that they can hardly reasonably claim to own any combination of two words that are prominent in their franchises.

Eeeexactly. Let's start suing people for using the term "Prime Time", or LG for calling its handsets Optimus.

There is nothing inheritently Transformer-ish in Transformer Prime, they're not infringing Transformers in the slightest. They just "happen" to have a similar name. Marketing reasons, obviously - people are familiar with both words and are likely to react positively upon hearing them. Regardless of that though, there is no infringement going on.

Could no one at Asus see this coming? Seriously, this can't be a surprise for them.

You guys *have* to be joking right now. I'm starting to think you're just opposing it because it's Hasbro and not because it's blatantly obvious that people can be confused by the name - two trademarked names BY Hasbro. Regardless of whether to two words separated have their own meanings, the name is heavily related to Transformers and that franchise's character. Seriously, if you don't see this - i can't help you. I honestly can't.

Prime is a standard, everyday word, transformer is too. They're both used in everyday life. Slightly different situation there. Link on its own should pass though.

It would be like if Nintendo sued the BBC Company for using the phrase "The Weakest Link".

Now to see if Hasbro plans to sue ranchers for raising ponies.

Oh crap! Zelda's Pizza! That's like a double mix against Nintendo of princesses and italian plumbers.
