It was commonly known that November was a month of some hectic game launches, and nearly every game released suffered some kind of launch issue. This included Halo the Master Chief Collection, and its atrocious matchmaking issues that are still being ironed out today.
Fans have been outcrying for some kind of compensation for their suffering, so 343 decided, "Hey... Lets throw another game their way why don't we?"
To be eligible for most of the free content, you must be an "online user" who played Halo: The Master Chief Collection between launch date (November 11, 2014) and yesterday, December 19. The exception is for the newly remastered Halo 2 map, which will be made available to everyone.

It's a well known fact I am one of the biggest Halo freaks on this forum, and i've done my fair share of complaining about the Halo MCC launch (I don't think there isnt a single curse I havent uttered in the same sentence as 343 industries.)

This news came as quite a pleasant surprise, as I was a very big fan of ODST, however, mostly for its FireFight mode, which will not be included on launch. That being said, it is wonderful to see 343 take responsibility for their launch, and even offer compensation as large as this for it. I am humbled and happy to be a Halo fan still :grog:

Sucks that it's only for people that have played it online, sounds like. I've had it and I've been playing it connected to Live but only local :(

I loved ODST enough to get 1000/1000 on it to unlock the Red Recon helmet! Probably the toughest 1000 I have from 360 as you need 3 other great players to make it to wave 50 of firefight on every map, probably impossible to do any more as no one plays it.
Ubisoft offered a selection of games for ACU players, MS now offer ODST to Halo players, Driveclub players got some DLC lol. Seems like Sony need to offer something more substantial.

I wonder how much ODST will cost? I missed out on this by one day and I liked the game (I found it more enjoyable than 3 or Reach, I would have preferred an ODST 2 instead of the latter).

My brother bought this at launch but doesn't have a XB1 so that kinda sucks.

The Collection seems kinda like the XB1 killer app at the moment though so this seems like a nice plus.

Part of it has to be downloaded which is what, 20 GB? And then there's this.

Come on Microsoft release the damn collection on 2-3 Blu-rays and call it "Special Edition" if you will. It's such an annoyance that a customer buys a game on disc and yet has to fucking download it later on.

...So you'd rather have to constantly get up and switch disks rather than just sit through one download?

Most games have installs nowadays, that's just the downside of having large games. Everything comes packed on a Bluray or other equivalent and needs and install to run better and load faster. Hell GTA V had to have a massive install when I first booted it up.

It's an annoyance, yes, but it's just a hindrance of technology at this time. Give it a couple years and they'll probably be gone.

Besides, the PS4 and XB1 come with like what, 500GB standard?

You have to remember that not everyone has high speed internet connection so that download could last from 8hrs to 24hrs or more, so yes, have more discs and allow all of the data to be available instantly. Changing discs isn't an issue for me, eject, swap, insert, done.

I plan on getting XO in the future and Halo HD Collection but only if they make the complete collection as I don't want to download what should've been included anyway.

The big question is, does Xbox Live Silver count as an "online user"?

No it does not, because you have to have accessed the Multiplayer of Halo the master chief collection ad have attempted to play a multiplayer match in order to be eligible for this offer.

And you need an xbox love gold account to be able to do that.

Fair enough, but it doesn't really specify that directly (obviously that was the intention).... I guess we will know shortly.

Why is it that most arguments against supplying 2-3 discs involves disc swapping? Chances are any disc swapping on the Xbone/PS4 will only be for the initial install like with Halo 4 and GTAV on the 360.

I bought my copy Saturday and I had to wait until the next day before I could play all of it, I would rather have the initial game come in two discs and be able to play the same day.

It may be a "hindrance of technology at this time" but it is a problem now.

Oh IGN please stop messing up the information originally emailed out to selected users...

The real requirements are: you must have played any game or mode in the collection with an internet connected xbox one before the patch went live at approximately 12pm est December 20th. This so Microsoft knows who played or bought the game before the biggest bugs were stopped. No need to have actually tried multiplayer.

This isn't the early 2000's where you needed to install PC games by swapping discs any more. Technology moves on. When was the last time you had to do a multidisc install? Baldur's Gate? Dungeon Siege? Really now.

Microsoft would rather save the money of making an additional 1-2 discs and packaging it by doing an internet install. Sorry you have a shitty internet connection but companies can't cater to those who have shit internet.

People are wrong who have been saying that you don't get the game if you haven't played matchmaking. Whether you played campaign, only played multiplayer, both, or neither, ODST and RELIC will be free for you. If you ever played MCC you will get a free month of live and in game stuff.

This game (Halo Masterchief Collection) is insane. 46 GB install off the disc. 15GB patch data from XBLA so far. Plus whatever ODST and future patchs take up.

500GB on the Xbox one is like the 512MB on the Wii

Last games I played with multiple discs was Halo 4 and GTA V on the 360 back in the early-mid 2010's and I have a few disc based PC games from a few years ago which have multiple discs.

My internet connection is also the best I can get in my area (better than the UK national average) and does me for most things but I know people with worse connections and frankly for the sake of pennies I'd rather they include the disc in a £40 game.

Plus MS should be concerned about people's internet connections since at the end of the day it affects them (particularly since they're looking at streaming and want people to use DD more).

No its worse, on the Xbox One you MUST use the HDD for everything where as on the Wii it was only for DD.

If you buy an external hard drive, you can have the xbox one format it for games only if you like.

Plus it doesn't matter atm if you have the disc. If your xbone is connected to the internet when you do the install, it will download everything from the net. IMO there should be an option each time you install the game if you want it to use the disc or the net to do so, when you own the disc. In away it's a good thing, saves your disc drive from burning out.

I just said this basically. you have been ninja'd

Are those multiple discs for installation or multiple discs for playing? That's what I was asking. Multiple discs for playing was a limitation of the 360, Lost Odyssey has like 3 discs, Final Fantasy XIII has like 4, even Mass Effect 2 has 2 discs. But they're all for playing, not for installation data.

My point is that making extra discs that are useless after installation is outdated. If technology keeps pushing forward then internet connections will need to be updated, either by consumers or providers.
