I'd never played any Steam games before until yesterday when I went round to my friend's house. I didn't realize they were so amazing... Seriously, Half Life 2 has the be THE best game I have ever played and Counter Strike is good as well (my friend's in a clan called aFK or something...).
I started a new game and got up to the bit where the teleporter goes wrong but then my friend decided to show me Ravenholm and that was so scary... But it's fun picking up those cogs and slicing through a row of 5 undeads with one shot!
I'm going to buy Half Life and Half Life 2 when I get my new PC...

    What are your thoughts...?

Yeah it is a very good game. You should also get Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode 2 when it's released.

Counter Strike is the best FPS game for LAN parties. AOM (age of mythology) is the best strategy game for LAN parties

Funny? Best game ever? I don't know what you have played otherwise to get to this conclusion [IMG] . HL2 is an ok game but did nothing which has not been done before already, nor graphics wise, nor physics wise. Gameplay and story wise the franchise made a big step back from the precedor. The only reason to get HL2 is to get various mods for it ( PoA, various single player mods, Garry's Mod and so forth ).

Ok, so I don't play many PC games. But it impressed me! And the soundtrack is awesome.

Half Life is much better than HL2. HL2 is way too short, but some of the level design is amazing (when you're in the mountains), awesome! I used to play CS quite a lot in clans and doing LANs etc, it was a lot better 'back in the day' compared to now. I think Valve are just squeezing money out of people. CS went downhill as soon as they dropped WON.

You should play Deus Ex too, and more recently (if you happen to own a very nice gaming PC), STALKER -- I played through it whilst having to squint to make out the blurred enemies [IMG] Kind of ruined it, but a good game. Fallout 3 comes out relatively soon too, so keep an eye out for that [IMG]

Half Life 2 is my favourite FPS and probably favourite action game too. It's just an amazing play through experience. The world is fantastic, the level diversity, the journey and characters make it so amazing.

Episode one is fantastic too, and I can't wait for episode two. They're taking their time over it, so it better be good. [IMG]

I think Half Life 1 was extraordinary, but Half Life 2 was 'only' good. Not as good as many say, imo. For me, F.E.A.R. was far more atmospheric.

Also I don't like steam, regardless of my HL2 opinion.

Here's a snippet why from someone else.

    You mean disadvantages like these?

    - having to have an internet connection to play the single player game, and spending several hours waiting for it to decrypt when I bought it release day
    - how they first required both steam activation AND a dvd check for the store-bought version
    - that I can't resell my copy of HL2 when I get bored with it
    - that when steam goes belly-up, I can't play (had that problem at a LAN party, massive counter-strike problems for lots of people as the net connection couldn't handle steam logins for 200 ppl)
    - if valve goes out of business, I lose the ability to play the game I paid for
    - mandatory patches tying up my internet connection unexpectedly, a real problem for dialup users
    - piracy protection that does nothing to stop hacked copies showing up on torrent sites, but makes me jump through hoops
    - randomly losing my installed game files, forcing me to spend hours downloading and reinstalling the game via steam (happened to me twice now)

I'm sorry, but these far outweigh any good points of steam. I for one won't be purchasing any new games from valve that require it. I'm a customer, not a damn lab rat. Make steam optional so you can use it for the handy features, such as easy patch download, and purchase games through it if you wish. But don't sell something in a box in a retail store, then turn round and treat it like a rental.

I tried to get the above into a spoiler tag not to troll around here, but that didn't work, I might've been to stupid [IMG]

    Edit: Fixed "spoiler"

I completed that game a year or so ago. My word, that game is simply amazing. My favorite stage is Ravenholm. Its just too realistic and fantastic. I remember I ran out of ammo in that stage, and had to fight my way out with a crowbar.

    Sigh... the memories [IMG]

Beautiful game. Just one great set piece after the other. I finished episode 1 last week, nice but faaar too short. I think they are delaying Ep2 to put more content in - as EP1 just seemed a little over priced.

Half Life 2 Orange Box will have Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, and an online multiplayer Team Fortress 2, and a puzzle game called Portal. All that for 50 bucks on pc, and 60 bucks on the 360.

I've played through about half to 3/4 of the original Half-Life on PS2 (until I got an insurmountable disc read error [IMG] ) and thought it was great. I'm currently playing the Xbox version of 2 on the 360, and think it's pretty good, but haven't gotten out into the big world yet, which everybody says is awesome.

HL2 is my favorite single-player FPS. It's one of those games that I continuously go back and play again at least once a year.

I used to have it pirated, but about a year ago when I was craving to play it again (cause I had just gotten my new laptop that can run it with the top graphics settings.), I realized I finally had money to buy it. So I bought it and Ep1 with Lost Coast and still craved more after I was done.

can't say i liked or enjoyed half life 2, the game was such a boring pos. Half Life 1, however, was brilliant and I loved the subsequent add ons and stories. Half Life 2 just didn't cut the mustard for me.

Isn't there a version of HL2 that comes with an update of the original? I think counterstrike was in the bundle too.

Yeah, the collectors edition came with Half Life: Source, Counter-Strike: Source, HL2 T-Shirt and a book of HL2 art work, etc.

I think it came with a few other things, but I've installed EP1 since and that came with a few other things aswell.
