here's another fyi
the guy who beat smealum in that homebrew contest (1st place) did so with his own bullet-hell project, Space Impakto.
It's actually already open source, too.

Looks quite similar to Touhou Project (which has an open source clone: https://github.com/laochailan/taisei if someone wants to work on it).

- Just to note, @Fittings is working on making something called "BulletHell3DS", it appears to be a 3D port of the Touhou DS, but it is still a work in progress.
