The worst case scenerio has entered US shores

Two of Japan’s biggest mobile phone game platform providers recently announced that they’re expanding to open new development offices in the west. GREE and DeNA are both looking to North America for expansion.

GREE International Inc. are moving into a new office in San Francisco’s China Basin, which is already home to other social and mobile games companies. Their new San Francisco studio will aim to develop high-quality free-to-play games. These titles will be released on the global GREE Platform, scheduled for release sometime in Q2 2012.

Meanwhile, Mobage provider, DeNA Co. Ltd, have opened a new subsidiary in Vancouver, Canada, in order to bolster their own first-party game output.

DeNA Studios Canada Ltd will provide design and operation support for other companies under DeNA. It will be headed by Gameview CEO, Irfan Virk. Gameview, known for developing Tap Fish, were acquired be DeNA in 2010.

Now American developers are no longer safe from the evil that's social gaming, we don't want it, it sucks.

...but I like some of the social games...

You do know that social gaming has completely taken out quite a few good developers in Japan from the console market and are slowly doing the same for those who joined but are still in the market. It can happen here as well. I don't like the direction the future of gaming is heading, social gaming is not a step in the right direction for the most part, I'd rather play games on a console not on a phone or on a social network site.

...All I play is Hemp Tycoon.

There was some a Game Dev Story clone on Facebook, too, and it looked promising (I think it was even worked on by Kairosoft), but it was taken down one day.

...In short, I only like the some that wouldn't do anything to ruin the good stuff.

BREAKING NEWS: Social games have been here for like ever. Nothing is changing because of GREE and DeNA, it's just more options. (GREE has been in the American market since April 2011, probably even longer).

I don't see the hate, console games will stay. There are devs that won't change, some that have the right balance and some that go to mobile because it's easier or they wasn't successful enough in the console market.

Wow, talk about overreaction..

You know, DeNa isn't bad at all. I actually enjoy the games they publish, most noteably Ninja Royale.

In my opinion this will only add more great games available to play on the go. I'm looking forward to more games! =)

I found some GREE games on android that looked interesting, but I couldn't get them because I needed a Japanese Gree account. (Which you also need a japanese cell phone to get)
I doubt this will affect console games in any way. There's always been social games, nothing different here.

Oh no, more social games in the United States? How can we go on living? Please, won't somebody, anybody, save us from this horrific tragedy?

Also, here's a reason to get excited. This would bring major developers towards the west. Here are some announced games:
Capcom: Resident Evil Mercenaries VS for GREE, Monster Hunter Dynamic Hunting for GREE
Tecmo Koei: Dynasty Warriors for GREE
Konami: DanceDanceRevolution
Square Enix: Emperor’s SaGa, Galaxy Dungeon
Sega: Ryu ga Gotoku Kizuna (Yakuza Kizuna/Bonds)
Taito: Period Zero, Dead Connection
Namco Bandai: Kamen Rider Wars, Super Sentai Wars, Ultraman Taisen
Source.

This means more high quality games on Android and iOS platforms with support from the biggest developers from Japan.

It all looks nice but I'm still not convinced this is a good idea besides another way to make money.
