...he would be campaigning for a basic free internet service in every home.

Only partially, corporations would subsidise part of the cost as well. What really is the problem with that though? People would get basic internet at cost paid for by taxes. It wouldn't stop the companies charging an extra fee for a far superior service and making obscene profit from that like they do now. Surely if you love your country you want it to have all the opportunities necessary in order to make it a thriving place? Free internet in every home could lead to a higher educated nation, a higher educated nation leads to a better nation. A highly educated nation leads to better employment opportunities, a better trained nation, less unemployment and increased manufacturing due to a better trained/educated population. There's lots of advantages to it, the only disadvantage of it is a slight increase in taxes. It's a case of putting the whole before the singular.

Socialism evolved from communism, not the other way round. Socialism came about because people realised that there were far too many faults with Marx's ideals. Due to human nature Communism is unworkable. It's a lovely dream, but that's all it really is.

I personally wouldn't want to live in a communist country, even one that follows Marx's ideals to the letter. Stalin/Lenin/Mao/Jung/Castro are all perfect examples of why human nature can't handle Communism. Human greed and ego is far too powerful of an emotion. You do know that all the countries labelled as communist aren't actually communist? They're dictatorships with a handful of communist/socialist policies., and only the policies needed in order to improve the lives of the ruling elite.

And you think capitalism of the Chicago School of Economics variety doesn't lead to that? Capitalism leads to corporatism, which is just as bad and soul crushing.

Well, back on topic, no one wants this to happen. Does the government WANT us to riot? If they shut off the internet, I certainly would. Why would they ever need to shut the internet off? And what makes them think they have the right to?

That's a huge topic to go into to be honest. To sum it up sloppily and in a huge sweeping generalisation it's the introduction of corporatism globally. Just like most presidents since Nixon (and Prime Ministers in Britain since Thatcher) he's following corporate interests. Discussing all that though would take this thread waaaaaay off-topic.

To take it back more on topic I personally believe the internet kill switch idea is just a way for the US government and corporations to assert dominance. Either tow our line or we'll take away the internet, and society has been shaped in a way now that the internet is integral to our lives. Switching off the internet would set a nation back decades. Plus look at how effective the internet was in shaping the revolution in Egypt. Installing a kill switch would safeguard the US government from that very thing.

I couldn't have said it any better...

ON TOPIC - how much of a chance do you think this will actually pass?

I'm not bad for someone turfed out of school at 15! lol

QUOTEON TOPIC - how much of a chance do you think this will actually pass?

That's a hard one to predict. I'm leaning more towards the assumption that it will go through. There's more to gain for the government by it going through than it not. It all depends on whether the American population can stop being at each others throats over things like health care, Muslims and immigrants for a while and start putting pressure on the government to stop taking away the liberties they claim to hold dear. I don't live there so don't really know how it is on the ground, I can only go by what I can gauge as an outsider reading news reports and speaking to people that live there. What do you reckon the chances are?

If this goes through, it will take 5 seconds before Anonymous and 4chan decide "fuck this" and launch an assault on Washington...

If the kill switch were handled by an infallible AI computer system that could detect an attack to our national security, I would be all for the pass.

Though since this country is still run by humans that are susceptible to human emotion, greed, lust, etc...I would have to strongly disagree with this decision.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I have been watching the crap that have been going on in Egypt. The goverment has the right to activate the internet kill-switch in order to protect itself and its people. Egypt cut-off internet access to its people because the people of Egypt were starting a Civil War.

The US government is not going to shut off the internet because some people are uploading "I hate [insert US president here]" videos.

I guess it is true what people say. "The real Terrorists are the people that spread bad rumors on the internet that scare people."

I will break the bad news here, just because you sign a petition does not mean that the offending party will comply. It's not like we have a large number of people that are armed to the teeth. The offending party can be like "We have the power, we do as we please, F**K everybody else!"

If you are so worried that you will lose your high-speed internet due to some dumb*** doing some dumb**** then go to an IT college and learn how to make your own ISP that you have complete control over, then hide it away in a chill chamber that has a hidden entrance. That way the FCC will never find it.

Kill all of the nodes in and out of the country, and that wouldn't be much of a solution, would it?

The way Egypt did it was quick and sloppy. I'm sure if the US manages to do the same thing, they would be more prepared, and would do things the right way.

So really all we need is to make The Boss into a computer and have her determine when the killswitch needs to be activated.

We'll call it... Peace Walker!
