Electronic Dance Music is a huge and widely complex thing to get into. So heres a guide to help
people find some music they didn't know about before and not just have the usual view of 'its all
the same' This guide is directed towards the harder side of dance music, but whole much more detailed
explanations could be given for other subgenres so it really gives you a sense of scale. 5 examples
per genre is really nowhere near enough to accurately sum up a whole style of sound but lets hope
it gives an idea at least. Now i know theres already an EDM which covers way more than this but its
terrible and best to be ignored.

Oldschoool Breakbeat Hardcore
1991+

Cut up breaks, sped-up vocals this was prehaps the 'punk' movement but for electronic. While this
selection shows some of the big hands in the air anthems, a lot of this produced was far darker
faster and grimey, leading into the creation of Jungle. Tons more can be written about this but
consider it just an introduction.

Zero B - Lock Up ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkfwoAr-zPI )
Sonz of a Loop de Loop Era - Far Out ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0NGQ_bTg18 )
Awesome 3 - Don't Go ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4HhUSQA_7 )
Isotonik - Everywhere I Go (Fizzy Orange Mix) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiDWZiHrhGY )
Liquid Crystal - You Got Me ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_J2ky4AGGI )

Labels: Moving Shadow, Reinforced Records, Production House, Suburban Base, Basement

4beat, early happy hardcore
1993+

This sped up the breaks, sped up the vocals and added 4/4 kicks. This split the scene into deep and
dark the jungle route or uplifting and euphoric the 4beat route. Although for a long time events played
both and big tracks shared popularity on both sides of the scene. Note emphasis on pianos and vocals.

SMD #1 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iB5ViE86UEM ) (considered first 4beat song ever)
Jimmy J & Cru-LT - Take Me Away (Slipmatt Remix) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01axaTqEB2Q )
Space Cube - Sesssion ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA2_UOfbph0 )
Ramos, Supreme and Sunset Regime - Gotta Believe ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aH-wY-VFqU )

Labels: SMD, Impact, Kniteforce, Remix, Just Another Label, Slammin Vinyl

Early Hardcore/Gabber
1991+

This is the dutch version of hardcore while we had our breakbeats. 4/4 no messing about
just pounding kicks and violent samples.

Labels: Rotterdam, Mokum, Industrial Strength

Bouncy Techno
1993+

Scottish offshoot of the dutch hardcore adding their own elements and definitely inspired by
what was happening in England and the time. 4/4 offbeat kicks giving a very circusy feel at
times. Also became somewhat popular in Holland.

Scott Brown - Detonated ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oq_9rkxmWE )

Labels: Evolution, Bass Generator, Screwdriver, Jolly Roger, Shoop!

Gabber
1996+

Very popular around Europe and hated the growing HHC movement in Europe too, especially
when their own DJ's like DJ Paul started making it.

3 Steps Aheads - Drop It ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB09paeV_aE )

The Stunned Guys & DJ Paul - He Never Lost His Hardcore - ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vd9a2W69vWE )

Labels: Midtown, Babyboom, Mokum, Dwarf, Ruffneck, Megarave

Happy Hardcore
1996+

Breakbeats almost completely gone, emphasis totally on 4/4 and usually cheesy overly happy
vocals. Still plenty of classics hidden in there but its a genre lacking quality and also
is a far bigger scope than to some up into 5 tracks, but here we go.

Force and Styles - Heart of Gold ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ysdis-c6yIw )
The Timespan - Shout Now (Hixxy & Sharkey Remix) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUqBrDMcV4M )

Labels: UK Dance, Next Generation, Blatant Beats, Evolution, Fusion, Quosh, Essential Platinum

Freeform/Trancecore
1996+

A very trance influenced offshoot of the current state of Hardcore with Sharkey leading the
way with his mixes on the Bonkers series. GBT (Great British Techno) was a main label for
this style.

Druid & Energy - Future Dimensions ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHmle6IlBuc)

Labels: GBT, Bonkers

UK Hardcore
1999+

This is a very wide genre with a lot of influences (specifically trance at the beginning) and in the 10
years its been going has gone through ever more changes usually latching onto other genres like the
currenty popularity of electro. Heres 5 tracks which sum up best i can though, if you like even just 1
then theres a good chance theres a subsection of UK hardcore you'll like.

Scott Brown - Elysium ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wOwu6pQ828 )
Frisky & Hujib - Get Away (Gammer Remix) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1t22EIh4JE )
Dj Kurt vs Fonzerelli - Moonlight Party (Original Mix) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPqpysonVqY )
DJ Entity - Spice ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0wIvVXEJhU ) Note: no unmixed version on youtube
Sy & Unknown - Make It Bounce ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqluFF9S62M )

The majority is popular UK hardcore is vocal trancey inspired so i included some variation from that.

Labels: Raver Baby, Future World, Twista, Thin N Crispy, Lethal Energy, Quosh, Essential Platinum 2002

Nu-Style Gabber
1999+

Gabber slowed down a bit here mostly started to focus more on melody, now all gabber is considered
this, and like old happy hardcore it is defunct. We start with one if the most famous Nu-Style tracks.

Neophyte - Braincrackin' ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV_PEtG_7Lw )
Art of Fighters - Bomberman ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVQ48AFlaJI )
Catscan - My First Response ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzHVYxhdl_E )
Hard Creation - I Will Have That Power ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsGQ6FhvPM0 )
Evil Acvitities ft. DJ Panic - Never Sleep Again ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zv8Fqw5d08)

Labels: Masters of Hardcore, Neophyte, The 3rd Movement, Traxtrorm, Enyzme

Hardstyle
2002+

Completely seperate from the other genres i've listed it, appears to be a hard trance spin-off with
some gabber elements. A lot of nice innovative tracks but as usual lost among the generic anthems.
Hardstyle fans say theres a nu and old style of tracks to distinguish from but we wont bother.

Showtek - Black Anthem 2008 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJx6dIKAAUY )
Builder - Her Voice (Super Bass mix) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XA-jExhFjYQ )
Headhunterz - Subsonic ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4QrYmB81pM )
Alphaverb - Got it! (Original mix) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UducCrbUgSU )
Technoboy - Ti Sento (Original mix) ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8qw9hFt_zw )

Labels: Scantraxx, Dutch Master Works, Fusion, Superplastik, Activa, Wicked, Dance Pollution

Now, theres a shitload more of this just within whats already covered. My best advice is if you find a
sound you like, find everything about it on discogs, find everything about the label it was on and just
download and listen to as much music you can until something sticks!

Hopefully in the future i'll cover even wider genres like dnb, dubstep, trance, house etc but until then
you just go out and find some music you love.

Great guide but this should be in the BMTM section.

This should be stickied.
