I would also like to bring Gateway with me.,...should I bring it to me in Japan I'll be there for a few weeks...and I'm leaving in about a week. Is it wise? I'm not sure what I should do.

Customs generally only care about large shipments. Say from a factory to a reseller. Anyone who just is working an airport terminal either won't know what it is or won't care.

I live in Japan (well and EU for that matter) and you can actually order gateway in Japan from a Japanese or Chinese seller.
Noone will do anything about it for crying out loud.
A few years ago I went to Japan with a fully moded xbox360 in my backpack, noone cared.

Are you worried about the Nintendo Zones forcibly updating your vulnerable system menu? Just flick wi-fi off and BAM. Can't remember the last time I used streetpass, maybe once back in 2011 when I got my launch day ambassador small O3DS......

Just remember all 3ds chargers are the same, if you buy a charger there it will charge your US 3ds

Real talk though I've been to Japan and took my Gateway and 3DS XL and I can GUARANTEE you won't have your head ripped off. It's so worth it btw, this one time I got over a hundred Streetpass tags in one day, compared to the bleak 1-tag-if-I'm-lucky situation here
