GOG is expanding its games preservation endeavours. Today, they announced that they are joining the European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects (EFGAMP). The latter collects and preserves digital gaming culture.

“GOG was created with video game preservation in mind”, said Maciej Gołębiewski, Managing Director at GOG, in a press release. “Classic games and the mission to safeguard them for future generations have always been at the core of our work. Over the past decade, we’ve honed our expertise in this area. The GOG Preservation Program, which ensures compatibility for over 100 games and delivers hundreds of enhancements, is just one example of this commitment. We were thrilled to see the Program warmly received not only by our players but also by our partners and the gaming industry as a whole”.

This a huge W. Game preservation should be something the game devs themselves should do. But like always, we have to rely on the players themselfs to solve this. This is a big step in the right direction.
Sadly, no game preservation for Denuvo games. We need a law that forces the publishers to release protection-free games 20 years after the release date.

I miss the times when GOG was laser-focused on games preservation. I don't think their pivot to becoming a market to compete with Steam was necessarily the best move they had available, but it is what it is.

The remake can have DRM, make the original free. I don't think that a 20 year old original would cannibalize the sales of the remake.
Unfortunately, this is where the business mindset comes in. A small minority is begging for the source code, a DRM-free release, etc. The goodwill that releasing those things would do is negligible because goodwill doesn't immediately generate profits. In fact, for a big company, some resources would have to be allocated just for the sake of a release, which makes no monetary sense to that mindset. If a savvy marketing team is in play, they might suggest doing so to build brand confidence just before a major release or announcement.

On top of all that, if the game didn't sell well the first time around, it wouldn't even be in the running for a remaster or remake. This is how games end up being forgotten. It's why Earthbound has largely been passed over by Nintendo. The popularity of Ness (and, later, Lucas) in Smash is what led to any action. Even then, didn't Nintendo charge a premium for Earthbound 1 and 2 on the eShop?

I really like GOG. You buy the game i get to download all the installation files and backup if you want or re-download them from your GOG account.
And if you have the backups with you, no need for any internet connection or client to launch them.

A lot of crackers seem to be coming out of the woodworks to crack Denuvo. I also see that there are other software companies removing denuvo protection from their games because of how pricey the software is.

This is a cool and amazing thing, but it sadly still doesn't stop greedy publishers from killing games.

The Stop Killing Games initiative would stop it, but it stalled at 400k signatures and more aren't coming, so I think it's safe to say that nothing will change.
