It's a story based on general human nature, their tendencies, and history. People have had wars between different groups (discrimination?). Literature is full of stories where a guy is saving a girl (sexism?).

Instead of saying Zelda is discriminatory or sexist, let's just say it is clichéd :)

because the hylians were a race of white skinned people that lived in the magically mild climate a days travel away from the hot desert sun. thats why their skin is white. later, when everyone moved to the hiltops of the world while everything was flooded, there were more tanned folks too btw.

why exactly there were no variantly skinned gerudo is a mystery, seeing as how they abducted men from outside their female only tribe to procreate. but! they literally might not be naturally dark skinned, but also simply tanned.

probably, there simply are races in that world and their genetics dont work the same way human genetics work. who knows exactly.
that thing with the islamic symbol, first of all, you realize who created that game? the japanese. at a time when we barely had any problems with muslims or islam. their game designer didnt think anything of it, same way they didnt think any of adding quran verses in the fire temple song or using other symbols from islamic religion or mythology. they did it because they needed symbols for decoration.

of course, the gerudo were somewhat representing arabs. they had a tribe of desert dwelling people and they chose to take from the real world desert dwelling people. in part, they were inspired by arabic folklore to some extend. they're a mixture of amazons and alibaba's 40 thiefs. did they dig into the stereotype bag somewhat? sure. did they mean anything by it? no. does it make the game racist or discriminative? no. its called context, use context to make sense of the world. as much as you would love to believe that context is irrelevant, it has never been in the history of mankind. and it never will be. and the people that act as if it was, will always end up being the laughing stock of history.
the only thing that gets discriminated against in the zelda games, is evil and darkness. twilight princess somewhat makes a point of it, they even sealed the gateway between the normal and a dark world (right after throwing the biggest evil they knew of into that world too)

the sheika (not exactly a race, but more of a clan, like basically the hyrule version of ninjas) weren't decimated in a genocide. they were servants of the royal family i think and at some point, during some kind of war, they were mostly wiped out by whatever enemy that attacked them. its never clearly revealed, but considering these lands are full of monsters and dark legendary creatures from all kinds of dimensions, and zelda has always been at the center of all these creatures attention, these things happen. they're not the only race to have disappeared from hyrule over the many many decades that the complete storyline goes through

while the gerudo always lived in the desert, were a society of warriors and thiefs and its probably for either of those reasons, together with the stealing of men, that they werent the most welcomed people in the world outside of their selfproclaimed kingdom.
in addition, dark witches governed their tribe and supported the spawn of the devil too.

also, you seem to be trying to make the point that since there was war, there had to have been discrimination. when war can be about so many things. land, power, ressources, ideals, sure.
and maybe, one or two wars were literally started because there were people praying to something else than the goddesses that created the world (mostly dark wizards and evil spirits)
but then, you cant really call that discriminatory. because they know gods and evil god equivalents exist. and they know that only three of the known gods actually dont want to drag the world down into chaos... so you cant really compare that to real world religious discrimination and war.

No, I don't think so.
Male players have no problem playing a female main character in games like Heavenly Sword or Beyond Good and Evil or Bayonetta. Female players have no problem playing Link.
It's an issue created by feminists, most of whom do not play games.

The real challenge will be how to create action adventure game that appeals to women. That's not what this thread is about, though. LoZ games do not appeal to female gamers. They have many more male players. While Bejeweled/Peggle/etc... have many more female gamers and do not appeal to men.

also saints row. i always play as a girl in those games because the girls have way more clothing options & the guys have ridiculously broad shoulders.

This is something that really bugs me out.

I, for instance, take no insults at all when seeing a certain symbol or chant being used from my religion or any other.
I don't get why the so called rage about discrimination and racism, it's called freedom of speech.
Why should those topics be excluded from videogames?
They are a part of the world and nothing should be untouchable, not even religion or politics.
This always seems to be the case with religious symbols in videogames.

For fuck's sake, Castlevania had crosses censored.
It's a goddamn game where you fight against unholy creatures, and the main villain is a vampire.
How the heck are we supposed to not include religious symbols that have been known for centuries to be used against vampires in several countries?

Like it or not, any religion is mythology, an ideal to some.
Good thing that people have evolved consciously and we no longer live in the middle ages.

If someone finds it offensive, then don't play it, you don't have to make others not play it just because you didn't like it.
As easy as that. not all the world is from the very same religion.

LoZ is one of my favorite gaming series by far, though the more i poke around through this game the more i find. Today i found out about the original gerudo symbol and how it represents the Islamic symbol, my mind was blown. Not to mention the racist history that is laid out in the LoZ, it just makes me wonder if I'm just endorsing a racist game. I start playing Triforce heroes not too long, and IN THE VERY BEGINNING of the game there's a kid (round eared) who wants to be a 'triforce hero' and he gets rejected for not having pointy ears...
Anyways i want your thoughts and opinions!
One of the problems with racism is that if you start looking at it, it's easy to see things no matter if they were intended or not. Worse...since racism is perceived by many, even making references can be seen as such.

Let's start with the original gerudo symbol. I had to look it up, as I had no idea how it looked (or the Islamitic flag, for that matter). For one, you are apparently talking about the old symbol (check the bottom of this page). I don't know why it's changed or in which game, but the new one certainly doesn't look like a real religion (no, the flying spaghetti monster doesn't count).
Does the old symbol resembles the Islamic symbol? Yes. Absolutely. It may be mirrored, but you have to be stupid to deny the resemblance. The question is: does that make it racist? The short answer is: "of course not: racism implies a common hatred against a race rather than a religion". The longer answer is that even if that were somehow true (is religism a word?), it doesn't mean it is used in a discriminative way. There are plenty of religious symbols and references in many games, and a lot of the time more explicit than the one you mention (Halo is a good example...you don't think it's 'racist' towards Christianity for using these references, right?).

I haven't played triiforce heroes, but I've seen similar scenes in games (or movies, for that matter). It's hard to tell the tone or meaning of that scene without knowing it, but by the sound of it, I'd say that it not only is not racism, but rather the opposite: it is aimed at pointing out the ridiculousness of racism. It's added to make you realize how stupid these little characteristic differences really are in the long run.

Oh so LoZ is now being racist towards elves and people with pointy ears? XD

And of course the guy is rejected.
At the VERY BEGINNING you see that the sign Link is reading specifically says guys with POINTY EARS.
it's like showing up for a job interview that specifically says "Women only" while you are a guy.
Are they being racist/sexist? not at all, because some jobs require women as attendants, I would love to see how well your Victoria's Secret store does with a guy behind the counter. :D

welcome to another round of: the blame game!
why the hell are people always looking for reasons to complain?
if it's for intensional hurting i agree... but come on!
the smurfs was sexual discriminating, my holiday for santa (while it was original against racism meant) now a racistic, for we dresup and some one feels it's meant to hurt.
please stop this. i hate this blame game, there is no wrong and right in life, there can be hate i feel the present it's more and more agressive looking for someone to blame.
yes a lot of countries did wrong in the past and yes there's still a long way to go for the better.
but salting the wounds won't help you cure them!

Even the Triforce knew that Hylians were the master race. The Triforce of course chose two Hylians as the holder of the Triforce of Wisdom and Courage. Ganondorf being the typical manipulative thief Gerudo, like how his scum bag race always is, had to go and trick the king, and wait for the correct time to steal the Triforce of Power!

Gas Gerudos, throw non pointy eared people into the Death Mountain volcano, and the world of Hyrule will be a better place!
