Unlike costello, I'm looking for a laptop with a 15.4" or 14.4" screen.
17" is too heavy of a laptop for me and anything smaller would be a pain to use.
    Budget? None really, grad gift.

    proc: core 2 duo @ 2.4 ghz
ram: 2gb or more (I can upgrade my self, usually cheaper)
    hdd: +200gb
gpu: something that can run last year's games. not planning on pc gaming much (note: definitely not crysis)

I was thinking the macbook pro. Besides gaming (there's always bootcamp), osx and the macbook pro seems pretty awesome. Also thinking of lenovo's thinkpad/ideapad, alienware's m15x, or dell's xps m1530. There's an apple store in a nearby shopping center so the mbp get's an automatic point from me.

    Suggestions?

Grad gift eh? Well for college, a 17 incher isn't that bad. They're actually really popular among college students. Besides, it'll stay in your dorm most of the time because it's a pain in the ass to find connection elsewhere.

However, if you insist on a 15.4" laptop, then the Dell XPS M1530 seems to be the best.
